Updating an alcove

By roomenvy

So many UK homes have alcoves, typically either side of the fireplace in the living room.  It’s generally a bit of a tricky decorating area, but I like the ideas from this room, it definitely satisfies my storage fetish!

You kn ow what’s worse than an alcove? No alcove at all! In a new build the trickiest area is the spaces on either side of the fireplace. Not a lot you can do with them and when they are level with the fireplace it makes creating a focal point in the room that much harder. I long for a Victorian villa with chimney breasts and lovely deep alcoves. Sigh.

Alcoves looks the best when an arwork is cut to fill the space. here is an example of a vineyard tile mural that perfectly fits the wall alcove.
