Dramatic dining room ideas

May 27, 2011

Attention, decor-addicts! You MUST check out Housetohome’s guide to adding drama to your dining room in five steps (no less, no more!). I’m telling you, dear friends, these are ideas worth stealing.

Now that's what I call wow-factor

And boy, do this lot know how to add drama. The faux-paneling effect creates a powerful impact for relatively little fuss and cost (enlist your handiest buddy if you’re no good with a hacksaw). Get busy, and prepare for jaws to drop at your next dinner party!

My kitchen scrapbook

May 25, 2011

I’ve just discovered a fun new tool on the Magnet kitchens web site. It’s called My Kitchen Scrapbook. It’s an easy way to gather together your favourite kitchen images and create a mood board for your dream kitchen.

My kitchen wish-list

That’s my dream kitchen mood board above! Lots of open shelving, pop colours and vintage accessories, please and thank-you. I uploaded lots of my own images (found on Design*Sponge and the Hindsvik blog, mainly) but you can also pick and choose from other people’s moodboards. Check it out, roomies!

Coveting conservatories

May 23, 2011

Oh dear, I do get just a touch of ‘room envy’ when I go on a conservatory browsing spree. These two images have got me dreaming of fancy home renovation projects…

Lovely jubbly

Is there nothing more calming and uplifting than a bright, light-filled conservatory? If there is, do let me know…

Serenity now

Ahhh, love that minimal look. Just one question though, why are there chairs on only one side of the table? Are they about to stage an X-Factor audition? Please, no – don’t spoil the serenity!

Mad about mid-century

May 20, 2011

If you’re an interior design junkie like me, you’ll know that the mid-century trend has been kicking around for a while now, and shows no signs of abating. The uber-swanky set and styling of ‘Mad Men’ has surely added fuel to the mid-century fire. Get the scoop on all the mid-century design classics in Don Draper’s office from this article on The Mid-Century Modernist. Swoon!

Don's dreamy office

Mid-century pieces seem to be popping up in interior design mags and blogs all the time. If you want an education in what to be looking for, you could do worse than checking out The Brick House, where blogger Morgan documents her home renovation projects and obsession with all things mid-century.

Mix it up to avoid living in a time warp

If you’re keen to try the trend, don’t think you need to do top-to-bottom mid-century like Don Draper’s office (you do want to live in the 21st Century, right?). Try introducing a few mid-century design classics teamed with more contemporary pieces for sophisticated style. The image above is from this Sneak Peak on Design*Sponge, illustrating the mix-it-up approach perfectly.

Kitchen’s I don’t envy

May 18, 2011

Lately I have been doing a great deal of rating, but very little slating. I’m afraid the time has come for me to cast my judging eye over some of the not-so-fabulous kitchen designs I’ve come across on Apartment Therapy and Design*Sponge.

Springy bar stools don't past the test

I know a lot of people love their island benches but there are some shockers out there! I say the chunkier the worse, especially when fussy brackets are needed to prop up the edges. And no to the bar stools too, my tip is to steer clear of anything too gimmicky or novelty, it’s guaranteed to date faster than that fondue set you got for Christmas. Or maybe at exactly the same rate…

More bar stools...tres blah

Another chunky island bench, I think I detect a theme. Don’t get me wrong, I love a black kitchen, but black and beige? Or is this one chocolate brown? I can’t even be sure. And to add to the list of rules for island benches – not too high!

Too much wood, not enough good

Maybe it’s the photography, but we’ve got a serious overload of sickly rich caramel wood here. And another chunky island. Chunky islands mean chunky extractor hoods, and that can’t be good for your feng shui, surely. Also, where are the windows?

Simplicity FTW

Aahhh, that’s better. A window and natural light cannot be beaten. I love the simple white cabinets and rustic styling. It just goes to show that money does not buy style!

Eclectic and homely

Exhibit B. Yes, maybe I am playing favourites with white here, but it’s not just that. Open shelving to display kitchen knick knacks and pared back design really help to create a kitchen that is timeless, unpretentious, cosy and yet stylish.

Alright, let me have it! Defend your island benches and tell me white is boring, or join me in the slating!

Lovely laundry room

May 16, 2011

I must admit, I live vicariously through tours of other people’s beautiful homes. I had to share this ‘Sneak Peek’ from Design*Sponge. Oh, to have a laundry room like THIS! Isn’t it just divine?

Utility room perfection

Did I mention the charmed owner of this delightful pad has also got a craft and gift wrapping station set up in this utility room? I DIE! It’s the stuff of my domestic dreams. The good news is, I think this is a wholly achievable look. I just need to pick up some Grundtal rails and accessories from IKEA, some cute fabric (Marimekko?), some storage jars, and hey-presto! I’ll be well on my way to domestic goddess status…

Not just for little ones!

May 15, 2011

Whether or not you are on the hunt for children’s decorating ideas, you’ve gotta admit this stripey wallpapered ceiling is seriously cool.

Now that's one lucky kid!

I could totally rock this look just about anywhere, living room, bathroom, kitchen…I’m getting carried away here. However, if you actually ARE looking for children’s room decorating ideas, and lots of you will be, there’s plenty on the Housetohome site to get you started! Maybe there’ll be some more genius ideas for my en-suite…

Latest living room looks

May 13, 2011

I know, I am really overdoing the alliteration on the blog post titles… I can’t help myself! Ahem, moving right along. Where was I? Oh yes, living room looks. This gallery of modern living room ideas is right on the money! So many great looks that are totally ‘now’ and yet not so trendy as to need redecorating in a few years time. Midnight blue ikat print rug? Don’t mind if I do!

Nothing like drooling over a few delicious interiors for some light Friday entertainment! Happy weekend, folks!

Happy hallways

May 12, 2011

Is it just me who can’t break the habit of dumping my bag, coat, keys and mail as soon as I get in the front door? I’ve been inspired to mend my ways by this terrifically-tidy hallway.

The neat freak within me is pleased...

If you’re looking for hallway decorating ideas, perhaps integrating some clever storage ideas could be just the ticket! A drawer, basket or hook for each family member would surely do something to reduce the accumulation of odds and ends in the entry to your home, no?

Inspiration for beautiful bookcases

May 6, 2011

If you’re looking for bookcase ideas then look no further than this wonderful selection over on Design*Sponge. I particularly loved this look for a bedroom.

Sort your bookcase by colour for extra points

There is really nothing more stylish and on-trend right now than colour-coding your books, it would seem. But don’t fret, for those who like a more eclectic look, there are plenty of lower maintenance options in the gallery! And if you’re like me and can never get enough of cute home ideas, check out these book shelving tips over at Housetohome.
