Child’s play

June 20, 2012

My friend’s daughter loves horses, so when I saw this Gymkhana wallpaper from Hibou Home I immediately knew she’d love it.

Your child may not be into equestrian-themed walls, but there are so many ways of incorporating their hobbies into a room scheme. Here are some of my favourites…

Indulge a love of buses with London-themed design.

A seaside theme is great for the summer…

Teenage schemes

May 23, 2012

You may not always understand your teenager, but one thing that is crystal clear is their need to put their own stamp on their bedroom. From skateboards and guitars to make-up chests and pink fluffy phones, why not find a way of displaying items and decorating their retreat in a quirky, creative way?

Hang hooks on the walls to display items, frame collections, posters and concert tickets, and use wall stickers – on cupboard doors and floors as well as the walls. You could try using blackboard paint on a wall for doodles, or, if your child is a budding artist, why not give them a wall to spray paint or grafitti themselves?

Here’s a few ideas…

Hang skateboards or other items on the wall for an eye-catching display

Wall stickers are a fun way of personalising a scheme – we love these Eiffel Tower designs

A map of the world makes an interesting backdrop, and the Smeg fridge is a super-cool addition. Plus the Union Jack theme is right on trend for 2012

Dramatic stripes and hits of black gives this young lady’s room an air of sophistication

Rooms with attitude

January 18, 2012

New year, new dilemmas. Like how to decorate your teenage boys’ bedroom in a way that meets with their approval. The easy way out is to paint everything in black, with matching rug and bedclothes. But when the lightbulb blew you’d never find them! So why not go against your better instincts, forget all proper colour and plump for grey. Ok, it’s dull to you, but it’s cool to them. Check out youngsters’ rooms on housetohome. Forget expensive shelving units (I’d give them  three years max) and go shopping at your friendly Swedish megastore for all this kind of stuff. All seems quite unimaginative, but the end of the day (when they really should be asleep anyway) they’ll spend most of the time glaring at a screen with thumbs waggling a controller. Or making a racket with that electric guitar. So why fret about colour schemes – keep it simple, I say. Now to convince my wife…

Cute girl’s bedroom idea

November 5, 2010

Ooooh la laaa! What a gorgeous girl’s bedroom decorating idea from Ideal Home. I would decorate my own room like this if I was sure that over 80% of my friends WOULDN’T suddenly wonder my a) age and b) nationality.

Here’s how to get the look:

1) Go for a grown up theme. If she’s grown out of princesses, then at least inject some girly glamour with a chic wallpaper that makes a statement.

2) Add more colour with wall stickers. They’re a great way to inject colour without overdoing it, plus they’re removable… in case she changes her mind/brings her boyfriend back from university 7 years later.

3) Go for built in storage behind the bed. This unit is the perfect house for everything from photo frames to books and CDs.

Children’s decorating ideas for every style

October 29, 2010

Whenever I’m in the mood for shopping, I go straight to Ellie, Deputy Shopping Editor of Ideal Home‘s blog HomeShoppingSpy for a quick fix. And what’s GREAT is that she’s a colleague, so browsing through what my next home purchase will be is basically work, right?

Anyway, we hunted Ellie down when she was doing her own shopping (aren’t we rude??) at Caravan Style in London, to quiz her on her top decorating ideas. Check out this children’s decorating ideas for every age video for some fab tips! … they almost made me broody… almost.

Modern wallpaper designs and ideas

September 22, 2010

Yikes! I had high hopes for a striking feature wall in my bedroom, but compared to these eye-popping looks in Livingetc‘s October issue, I might as well stick a page of the Financial Times behind my bed!

Lines of beauty! Give florals edge by mixing them with multi-directional striped wallpaper.

Dancing on the ceiling! Magic a little period detail into a plain room using a decorative wallpaper. Now this is a pattern worth waking up for!

Alphabet streak. Start little ones off on the road to cool design (and literary genius) with this cheeky alphabet children’s wallpaper by Quentin Blake.

No this is not a vortex! Envelope a hallway in bold wallpaper to form an entrance into calmer living rooms.

Top Trompe! Add depth to a small area with a 3-D design. I love Vivienne Westwood‘s Lace wallpaper – so pretty!

Cute children’s room decorating idea

August 10, 2010

I think this children’s bedroom is so sweet, and there’s none of the bright bubblegum garishness you see in so many girl’s room decorating schemes these days.

Simple furniture, quirky decorating touches and timeless vintage pieces. If it wasn’t for the single bed and the fact that onlookers would judge my attempts at drawing portraits, I would live there myself.

August 6, 2010

Designing a kids’ bedroom so that it looks like someone’s painted it with bubblegum, or so that it looks one gingerbread man away from the set of Shrek the Third might be just what your child is after, but at the end of the day, it’ll be YOU who is frantically scrubbing and re-painting the walls upon the news that their bringing their boyfriend or girlfriend back from university.

Plus, a children’s room can be a beautiful extension of your home. Housetohome has come up with their favourite kids bedroom schemes for modern, country and traditional-style homes. Inspiring!
