Kitchen’s I don’t envy

May 18, 2011

Lately I have been doing a great deal of rating, but very little slating. I’m afraid the time has come for me to cast my judging eye over some of the not-so-fabulous kitchen designs I’ve come across on Apartment Therapy and Design*Sponge.

Springy bar stools don't past the test

I know a lot of people love their island benches but there are some shockers out there! I say the chunkier the worse, especially when fussy brackets are needed to prop up the edges. And no to the bar stools too, my tip is to steer clear of anything too gimmicky or novelty, it’s guaranteed to date faster than that fondue set you got for Christmas. Or maybe at exactly the same rate…

More bar stools...tres blah

Another chunky island bench, I think I detect a theme. Don’t get me wrong, I love a black kitchen, but black and beige? Or is this one chocolate brown? I can’t even be sure. And to add to the list of rules for island benches – not too high!

Howard-AT-wood-kitchen-island

Too much wood, not enough good

Maybe it’s the photography, but we’ve got a serious overload of sickly rich caramel wood here. And another chunky island. Chunky islands mean chunky extractor hoods, and that can’t be good for your feng shui, surely. Also, where are the windows?

Simplicity FTW

Aahhh, that’s better. A window and natural light cannot be beaten. I love the simple white cabinets and rustic styling. It just goes to show that money does not buy style!

ds-katiequinn-white-kitchen-smeg

Eclectic and homely

Exhibit B. Yes, maybe I am playing favourites with white here, but it’s not just that. Open shelving to display kitchen knick knacks and pared back design really help to create a kitchen that is timeless, unpretentious, cosy and yet stylish.

Alright, let me have it! Defend your island benches and tell me white is boring, or join me in the slating!

Christmas trees – the good, the bad, the UGLY!

December 7, 2010

Anyone walking past my desk this afternoon would have thought I was having a webchat with a clown and a murderer at the same time! You see, I’ve been searching the web for Christmas tree decorating ideas, and while some of them filled me with festive joy, other so-called ‘best designs’ were enough to make a grown woman/decorating addict weep!

The good Christmas tree

Although I’d like a fuller tree (this one looks like it’s going to get frost-bite!), I adore the cute vintage decorations and homespun style. You can pick up everything for this look at John Lewis.

The bad Christmas tree

Although I’m a fan of all things ‘weird and wonderful’ I’m just not convinced by this alternative Christmas tree. I’m with Casa Sugar on this one, it’s just not … well … Christmassy?

The ugly Christmas tree

Oh my! This is what happens when bad Christmas decorations happen to good trees. I’m sure it works for some people, but do those people have a Lion, a Witch and also a Wardrobe??

p.s Is that actually a STONE HEAD in the middle of this tree? (or am I seeing a ghost?)

Can I come in? John Mayer’s New York pad

October 11, 2010

I imagine I feel about as inspired by John Mayer‘s home as Jennifer Aniston feels about his relationship skills. I was expecting it to have a little bit more personality and warmth, but instead it seems he’s paid the Armani Casa design team to create a grown up pad which although contains absolutely STUNNING furniture pieces and furnishings, doesn’t really say much about the musician, himself.

Am I being too harsh?

Check out Apartment Therapy for more pictures of his home, as featured in Elle Decor.

This is my favourite room in the home… mainly because of the funky picture gallery, and, let’s face it, the guitars!!

Bird wallpaper – the good, the bad and the ugly

July 29, 2010

It’s official, I’m completely torn by bird wallpapers. In some ways I find them adorable and the perfect finishing touch to a country-style scheme – especially a pretty little guest bedroom. However, in other ways I find them … well … quite frightening actually. The antique bird or retro bird ‘look’ just isn’t for me.

Here’s how far by bird wallpaper love goes…

The good – cute, country and destined for a guest bedroom, this simple bird wallpaper adds a welcoming touch.

The bad – hmmmmmm, a retro bird feature wall isn’t for me, but I’d certainly give this Seventies-inspired print marks for an eye-catching focal point.

The ugly – this is decorating hell for me. Too many birds, too many antiques, I would feel like I was on a period drama set, not my actual living room!

Bathroom design ideas – the good, the bad and the ugly!

July 14, 2010

Liever is becoming one of my favourite places to browse the latest quirky bathroom designs (it’s great for other rooms, too!) Fit-a-family baths, strange-but-true cabinetry, out-of this-wolrld furnishings, the works!

I’ve had a lil browse for bathroom designs this morning – anything to balance my kitchen craze at the moment – and found some fantastic designs … and some questionable ones …

The good

I mean, I could fit my HOUSE in that bath, plus those oversized spa-style pebbles could rival Stonehenge!

The bad

Note, I am NOT complaining about the setting (at ALL!) it’s just that the units are a bit modern and clinical for me.

The ugly

I do love a bathroom chandelier, but I’d just feel uncomfortable with minions serving me grapes – oh? Is that not a prerequisite of this kind of scheme?

Feature wallpaper goes cuckoo!

July 13, 2010

Woah! Slow down feature wallpaper, I only asked what your name was!! I love a funky feature wallpaper, and I love the bird trend – especially when it’s incorporated in a summery bedroom design idea, but this is too much for me.

Maybe it’s the combination of the feature wallpaper AND the screen upholstered in exactly the same pattern? Or maybe it’s the fact that a room full of swans isn’t my idea of relaxation? (as much as I love Osborn & Little designs in general) But I just think it’s too much – what do you guys think? Am I being harsh?

Kitchen design ideas – the good, the bad, the ugly

June 16, 2010

Phew… this is a serious chase of monochrome OVERBOARD. The kitchen cabinets, the floor – even the appliances are black and white. Not to mention the clutter. How does anyone cook in here?

And what are those weird creatures on the wallpaper border??

Now this more like it – simple, sophisticated and uncluttered. The kitchen peninsula has storage on both sides so tableware can be easily reached from the dining table. Add a shot of colour to the scheme with a fun tablecloth

Argh! Just when I thought I was back on safe ground another bizarre kitchen reared it’s ugly head…

As much as it horrifies me, I kind of ENJOY the horror. Check out more weird and wonderful kitchens here, and if those ugly kitchens got you giggling visit uglyhousephotos.com.

There’s supporting the World Cup and then there’s …

June 10, 2010

THIS! I’m all for a little cheek paint here, and an England top there, but an England-inspired bathroom? It’s confusion like I’ve never encountered. I’m just praying that this bathroom decorating scheme is inspired by some deep-routed sense or patriotism, or love of history, and not by their love of football. On the other hand, if it is in support of this year’s World Cup, I’m happy to see that someone has enough faith in the England team to permanently hang a giant red Perspex CROSS!

Not my taste, but I admire their patriotism (goodness knows we’ll need it!)

Can I come in? Penelope Cruz’s home

May 10, 2010

I always thought Penelope Cruz had taste? (Hmmmm, actually, I forgot about Tom Cruise…) Now I admit that this large LA pad is – especially in comparison to my teeny tiny flat – somewhat fantastic (the pool alone is enough to make my mouth water) … although I must say the interior décor is just not my style at all.

The kitchen is too dark for me, and a bit dated, I really don’t like the dining chairs, and the garden room looks like it’s been decorated with four large shabby hair extensions!

Glam bathroom chandelier

April 28, 2010

This has got to be the most co-ordinated bathroom I have ever seen, I mean how often do you see a bathroom where the lighting, walls, bathlinen AND bathroom flooring match perfectly? I’d feel compelled to wear only navy and white just to see how invisible I’d be. This bathroom from Homes & Gardens is way to formal for my taste, but I am obsessed with bathroom chandeliers at the moment … and I’d never say no to an oversized tub.

For me this is the decorating equivalent of the Shining Twins – it creates a dramatic effect, but it’s ultimately, quite scary!
