Into the woods

February 10, 2011

Bathrooms are always a bit of a tricky one, aren’t they? I’m not overly keen on uber-traditional bathrooms but am not really a fan of super-minimalist suites either (I mean, if I can’t clutter it up with millions of different lotions and potions, what’s the point?)

This folk-inspired wallpaper has got me weak at the knees

Which is why I adore this quirky, almost fairy-tale-like bathroom that I found whilst pottering around on Ideal Home earlier. I adore the folksy, hand-drawn quality of the paper, which has been varnished and covered with glass to make sure it doesn’t get water-damaged. Using wallpaper in the bathroom is a big upcoming trend and I love this forest illustration paper – paired with the croc-print bath and rococo cabinet it’s pretty much perfect. I’d like to see a few brighter accessories to stop the room looking quite so cold though.

What do you think? Is this fairy-tale-esque forest wallpaper hot or not?

G’day mate! Let’s celebrate Australia Day

January 26, 2011

OK, sorry for the unoriginal and tiresome headline, but Aussies are known for their warm, welcoming and ultra-cheery nature, and it seems this even extends to their home decor.

Today is Australia Day, so in celebration I want to show you this gorgeous single-storey Seventies house in Sydney, which mixes cool retro patterns and shapes with modern design features.

The leisurely lounge with a laidback style

It’s so easy to go overboard with retro furniture – the rule is, keep it simple and buy top quality. It’s clear owners Andrea and Ben Miller have stuck to that rule, mixing simple modern artwork and accessories with a few key pieces, such as the geometric rug and the low armchairs. I can imagine sinking into one of these chairs and watching the amazing Australian sun rise and fall.

Knock on wood

Wood and stone are the two main materials that are used throughout the house, and here you can see just how surprisingly warm and stylish these materials can be – even for a bathroom. I am struck by just how many shades of wood there are. The gilt-framed mirror is a lovely glam touch, too.

Turn up the heat with hot pink

All this wood and stone could look dull if it weren’t for the large windows that go around the house. But hot pink adds even more brightness, and what’s more reminds me that when you have a lot of neutral, such as stone and wood panelling, anything can work. A mixture of textures in this room makes it super-cosy too.

Whet your appetite with these fab wet rooms!

January 5, 2011

Wet rooms have to be so many things to so many people: a place to relax; a place to wash and go in a hurry; a practical space to get the kids washed and dressed, or to prep for a party.

Personally, I love a big, spacious wet room, but it’s often the smallest room in the house, and needs clever planning to make it work.

Here’s my absolute favourite wet room…well, this week, at least!

A clean, minimal wet room with a flash of red to brighten up the room

Why I love this wet room: I would never normally think a vibrant colour like red could work in a wet room, but it so does! The large, open space, white walls and stone floor ensure the red isn’t overpowering. And I love that you can have a shower but you don’t feel confined by grotty shower curtains.

Check out Housetohome’s top wet rooms, and let me know what you think.

Guess how much this bathroom update cost?

November 22, 2010

A grand old £94.98… or the cost of two tops and a pair of shoes according to a mini shopping trip this weekend… and I doubt the shoes will last as long.

I love the exotic bamboo theme – it’s a fresh take on the classic spa-style bathroom look. The look is kept simple with a white suite and neutral floor tiles, but bold bamboo wallpaper adds oomph, especially with complementing accessories.

Lunchtime lust: Scandi chic

November 16, 2010

Cool in summer, cooler still in winter, Scandi chic (and it’s closest pal, ski-chalet style) appeal to our classic home instints. Sometimes embracing the less-is-more mantra, with simplistic pared-back design and at others going all-out on striking pattern from wallpapers to soft furnishings, you can never accuse the Scandinavians of being boring. Quirky, yes (see the crazy winter advertising campaigns from Ikea) but dull, never.

Lusting this lunchtime comes courtesy of Ideal Home, and starts with a POW-factor moment…

You say pattern, I say wow! Pattern! Wow! Enough of that… A bold blue-based floral wallpaper adds depth to this space, while the lively mix-n-match printed cushions lift the inky-blue mood.

Bleached wooden floorboards, metal Tolix chairs updated with graphic-print seat pads, ice-white gloss kitchen… one wintry wonderland. I think I have created a kitchen shopping list, in a picture.

Looking for fun and functional hallway decorating ideas? A sky-blue cabinet by the front door hides shoes, while a full-length modern floral curtain keeps draughts at bay.

Clean up a bathroom with water-inspired painted surfaces, plain-white tiling and a countertop ceramic sink. Enamel details and a painted wooden stool (for child-friendly sink access) are the perfect finishing touches.

Friday’s Fetish: Country cottage crafts

October 15, 2010

I LOVE everything homespun style! It’s such a cosy and warm look and really gives your home a welcoming, ‘lived-in’ feel… as opposed to a home that screams ‘Oh this? I only use this to sleep?’ or ‘well it’s better than sleeping outside!!’

The cottage craft look is a big country-style trend this year. It’s all about funky patchwork, eclectic embroidery and pretty knits in the latest feel-good fabrics.

Check out these cosy decorating schemes

Create a patchwork-effect feature wall using two different colours of a vintage floral wallpaper

Summer of Love: top 3 bathrooms

September 10, 2010

Bathrooms are top of my agenda today – and I’m determined to find three amazing schemes to appear in my Summer of Love shortlist.

1) Top of the list is this little beauty from Fresh Home. The floor-to-ceiling windows create a seamless flow between inside and out, and the view is to die for! All I need now is a white fluffy robe (and maybe a personal masseuse) and I’m good to go.

2) Now the next bathroom might not have the same wow factor, but its elegant design and country-style accessories have completely won me over.

I love the roll-top bath and decorative screen – not to mention the white-painted panelled walls. It’s the definition of cool, calm and collected. Bliss.

3) Last, but not least, is this luxury bathroom from Livingetc.com.

This amazing bathroom has a bespoke combined shower and bath that creates a truly stunning feature. And the best part? It’s big enough for two!

Bathroom inspiration – boutique chic!

September 6, 2010

Did I ever show you the beautiful bathroom I saw at this year’s Ideal Home Show? I’m not sure I could get away with it in my ‘the size of a pea’ bathroom, but I love how smart and sophisticated it is… one day!

Here’s how to get the look…

1) Stick to classic monochrome but add warmth with plenty of cream – and keep the use of black to a minimum, like the black blind tapes and black-edged tiles shown here.

2) Mix period and modern pieces such as elaborate French-style furniture and a contemporary shower.

3) Splash out on high-shine wallpaper to add the wow-factor to your bathroom.

4) Cheat the eye with vinyl flooing instead of real limestone – spend the rest on swanky bath products!

5) Introduce accessories you wouldn’t think to see in the bathroom, such as a vintage-style cakestand for displaying pretty soaps and wine goblets for bath salts.

The ultimate glamorous bathroom

August 9, 2010

This uber-glam dressing area has given me UTTER bathroom envy! Floor-to-ceiling storage for clothes and shoes (which… obviously have to be filled to complete the look… !!); contemporary florals, including a pretty upholstered screen (utterly boudoir-chic); a velvet daybed for a luxurious place to relax PLUS a sexy roll-top bath = a ‘husbands/boyfriends/partners this doesn’t concern you’ bathroom!

Just imagine getting ready for a girly night out in this beauty!
