Best Bathrooms 2010 – And the winner is…

January 24, 2011

I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t want a lovely bathroom to relax in. But one man’s relaxation is another man’s torture, so choosing the best bathroom of 2010 is tricky.

However, the winner is this be-a-uuuu-tiful nautical bathroom.

Best bathroom 2010 | Nautical bathroom | Family bathroom | Room Envy

We are sailing to serenity

Even if it’s not totally your bag, the seaside accents are done just right, not too much to make you feel seasick.

This room is not blessed with an easy design. It’s a long, narrow room with an awkward eave, but instead of trying to ignore the shape and make the bath the focus of the room – as is usual – the eave, decorated with a sail effect blind, becomes the focus, and a place to chill. I LOVE it!

Chunky, roughed up shelves provide excellent storage. Two sinks mean no fighting over the bathroom in the morning – brilliant!

Simple touches like the decorative ship and fish tank are fun yet sophisticated.

Even though this bathroom looks super-cool, it’s still a family bathroom. So often a family bathroom means a plethora of rubber ducks, novelty soap and a whole load of Sponge Bob Square Pants paraphernalia. But in this bathroom kids’ toys are stored away and the steps are made from the same wood as the shelves, so as not to stand out.

Now, that’s got me thinking about the best chilren’s rooms of 2010…

The ultimate glamorous bathroom

August 9, 2010

This uber-glam dressing area has given me UTTER bathroom envy! Floor-to-ceiling storage for clothes and shoes (which… obviously have to be filled to complete the look… !!); contemporary florals, including a pretty upholstered screen (utterly boudoir-chic); a velvet daybed for a luxurious place to relax PLUS a sexy roll-top bath = a ‘husbands/boyfriends/partners this doesn’t concern you’ bathroom!

Just imagine getting ready for a girly night out in this beauty!

Beautiful bathroom design – pure and SIMPLE

July 22, 2010

I love love LOVE this cool, calm and collected bathroom decorating look. It’s all about neutral walls, wooden accessories and lightweight towels and robes for a spot summery relaxation in the tub!

The key to a country bathroom is a classic roll-top – place a screen nearby for a decorative touch!

I love the white-painted panelled walls. You could also layer a loosely woven voile fabric over an everyday plastic shower curtain to stop stray water spray – it looks stunning, too. Tie shells to the bottom for a pretty trim.

A teak basin adds warmth and a contemporary feel when fitted on to a classic console table. Arrange beauty buys and lotions on a wooden tray.

Bathroom design ideas – the good, the bad and the ugly!

July 14, 2010

Liever is becoming one of my favourite places to browse the latest quirky bathroom designs (it’s great for other rooms, too!) Fit-a-family baths, strange-but-true cabinetry, out-of this-wolrld furnishings, the works!

I’ve had a lil browse for bathroom designs this morning – anything to balance my kitchen craze at the moment – and found some fantastic designs … and some questionable ones …

The good

I mean, I could fit my HOUSE in that bath, plus those oversized spa-style pebbles could rival Stonehenge!

The bad

Note, I am NOT complaining about the setting (at ALL!) it’s just that the units are a bit modern and clinical for me.

The ugly

I do love a bathroom chandelier, but I’d just feel uncomfortable with minions serving me grapes – oh? Is that not a prerequisite of this kind of scheme?

I heart Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s bathroom tips

June 22, 2010

For years I have been waiting for a top notch decorating expert to confirm that a bottle of white wine is an ESSENTIAL element in a luxurious bathroom design, and finally the day has come! I LOVED chatting to Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen about what, for him, makes for a perfectly glamorous bathroom. He’s the new celebrity ambassador for Dolphin Bathrooms, so has bathroom design tips a plenty!

I love these more … ahem … controversial … bathroom tips!

And Laurence’s cruel-to-be-kind views on bathroom storage DEFINITELY made me chuckle the most – I know exactly who out of my friends and family I shall be subtley sharing this video link with … you know who you are!

Glam bathroom chandelier

April 28, 2010

This has got to be the most co-ordinated bathroom I have ever seen, I mean how often do you see a bathroom where the lighting, walls, bathlinen AND bathroom flooring match perfectly? I’d feel compelled to wear only navy and white just to see how invisible I’d be. This bathroom from Homes & Gardens is way to formal for my taste, but I am obsessed with bathroom chandeliers at the moment … and I’d never say no to an oversized tub.

For me this is the decorating equivalent of the Shining Twins – it creates a dramatic effect, but it’s ultimately, quite scary!

Ensuite bathroom ideas

March 29, 2010

When I hounded a very very tall George Clarke (aka the Restoration Man) for his top ways to add value to your home at this year’s Ideal Home Show, he couldn’t have been more emphatic with his ‘more bedrooms and bathrooms’ advice (as he towered over me!) Not someone to pass up on – or keep to myself – an expert’s top tip, I thought I’d have a look at the latest ensuite bathroom ideas.

An ensuite bathroom is the ultimate in hotel-style luxury, but there are plenty of different designs out there. Have a look at these beauties.

Don’t move, improve! A spare room is transformed into a vintage-style bathroom, separated from the bedroom with a glamorous arch.

The whole bedroom-bathroom trend is big at the moment, but for those who don’t want a tub at the foot of your bed, why not tuck your bathroom area away behind a large screen.

Define your ensuite bathroom area with a beautiful screen, like Farrow & Ball colour expert Joa Studholme’s stylish ensuite.

Not so much of an ensuite bathroom as an ensuite hallway shower, but I love the modern feel to this space – even though it might give anyone coming up the adjacent staircase a bit of a fright.

Personally, I’ve always liked the idea of a raised ensuite bathroom – it really zones the two areas, and you can transform it into the ultimate pampering hideaway.

Quick and easy bathroom decorating update

March 19, 2010

Aaaah, another ‘what shall I do this weekend’ conundrum! Go shopping for a new dress? (HSBC shakes his head), give my fridge a deep clean (Jenny shakes her head) OR transform my ENTIRE bathroom??

Check out this quick bathroom face-lift idea. All you need is a weekend, some smart buys and hey presto – a clutter-free bathroom retreat! (and the definition of a productive weekend, I might add!)

1) Hang Venetian blinds – they’re the ideal fuss-free option for a bathroom and give plenty of light and privacy!

2) Paint the walls in two subtle shades of blue, more exciting than white, but with the same light-boosting effect.

3) Add tall storage units – they’re clutter busting but won’t fill up the space. Choose a combination of both open and closed storage so you can display pretty items but hide clutter.

4) Give it a shot of pattern with a luxe bath mat in a bold design. It’ll also add softness to a room with lots of hard surfaces.

5) Keep the floor as free as possible with wall-mounted storage, like a rustic shelf for spare loo rolls.

VOILA!

Linen cupboard lusting

March 3, 2010

Want to find the perfect gift for Mother’s Day? Why not show Mum that you’ve evolved into a domestic goddess with a super-organised linen cupboard like this one! If she’s anything like my mum, she’ll need to sit down with a glass of wine – her motherly work will be complete!

I’m RUTHLESSLY stealing the fab ideas of Ideal Home’s how to plan the perfect linen cupboard – quick, call the police!!

1) Keep a blanket bag to protect out-of-season duvets and blankets from dust.

2) Add a hanging organiser for spare soaps, toothbrushes and toothpaste etc for guests – hostess with the mostess!

3) Give each guest room a colour theme for towels and bed linen.

4) Keep smaller items like flannels in baskets or, like me the other day, you’ll find a hand towel tucked INTO the bottom of your duvet.

5) Keep children’s swimming kits, or your own gymwear on hooks on the back of the door so you can grab them as you rush out (not that you’re in a hurry to get to the gym, mind.)
