Drift away…

May 9, 2012

There are two things in interiors that I’ve heard a lot about the last few months. One is red, white and blue – all things British are big for 2012 as you may have already noticed. The second is coastal; think seaside, think shells, think driftwood.

So here I bring you a bedroom that I think blends these two themes perfectly. Courtesy of WorldStores, this scheme conjures images of life by the sea, with its mix of sun-bleached floorboards and frames teamed with splashes of jubilant nautical shades. Perfect – but what do you think?

Bed is calling…

August 24, 2011

Now I know that bright and bold is bang on trend at the moment, but for me, a bedroom is all about simplicity. For example, this scheme certainly has no frills, but the pretty bedlinen (Escada at Harrods), really ups this room’s va va voom. Teamed with a modern tulip-style table and old-fashioned gilt coatstand, it reminds me of an elegant Parisian apartment.

No clutter apart from a few choice items on the table, no artwork, no rug. Just pale taupe-coloured walls and an evocative bed that calls out to be snuggled up in.

Pretty in… purple?

July 29, 2011

For those of you with partners who take more than a passing interest as to how your home is decorated, you may understand my daily frustration with having to keep my ‘girlieness’ to a minimum. There was a time when I had a pretty bedroom, with bevelled mirrors on the wall, delicate wallpaper and a few artworks with French-style shoes and handbags adorning them. Gone are those days. Now it’s about compromise for me, and although I’m very pleased with my present less-feminine bedroom, I couldn’t help being drawn to this gorgeous scheme, courtesy of Dulux.

The soft grey shade on the walls (Potters Clay 2) works beautifully teamed with fresh white bed linen and pastel bedspreads and throws. Then there’s the elegant group of mirrors that gives the room a charming and almost vintage feel.

Would you like to know the best bit for me? Look closely and you’ll notice that what looks like a Tromp L’oeil headboard is actually painted on. Dulux’s recommended colour for Autumn/Winter is damson-coloured Twilight Cinders and this is one of its six shades, Twilight Cinders 1. It really gives an added quirkiness to the room.

Have any of you ever painted a headboard like this, or do you battle with your other half over feminine accessories and colours?

A cuter bedroom decorating idea?

April 12, 2011

GAH! I can’t decide between this beautiful vintage bedroom and yesterday’s cute-as-pie guest bedroom?? What do you guys think?

Check out this photo gallery of 5 steps to a vintage-style bedroom

My favourite idea has to be the lace wall stencil and jewellery display! Never has buying new jewellery been so justifiable in the interior design style stakes!

The cutest bedroom decorating idea…

April 11, 2011

Ok, it’s a bit of a toss up between this and another gorgeous look actually, the other one I’ll save for tomorrow… (what? I’ve got to keep some mystery!?) Anyway, inspired by my poor excuse for a hotel-style guest bedroom retreat (ahem… think ‘sofa bed’) I’ve been taking notes from Housetohome’s latest spring decorating idea – 5 steps to a pretty guest bedroom.

Feature wallpaper goes cuckoo!

July 13, 2010

Woah! Slow down feature wallpaper, I only asked what your name was!! I love a funky feature wallpaper, and I love the bird trend – especially when it’s incorporated in a summery bedroom design idea, but this is too much for me.

Maybe it’s the combination of the feature wallpaper AND the screen upholstered in exactly the same pattern? Or maybe it’s the fact that a room full of swans isn’t my idea of relaxation? (as much as I love Osborn & Little designs in general) But I just think it’s too much – what do you guys think? Am I being harsh?

Lunchtime Lust: black and white bedrooms

May 11, 2010

Everyone’s chatting about black and white bedrooms this week, and although I am trying to egg summer on with chat of vintage florals and beach-hut inspired decorating, I’m afraid I’m going to have to hop on the bandwagon! These bedroom decorating ideas are simply dreamy!

And you don’t have to go all-out with all-black walls and white accents (quite the intimidating look!), instead, add definition with black wallpaper or monochrome bedlinen.

Be inspired by these stunning designs.

Create a feature wall with a stunning and shimmering black bedroom wallpaper, keep the rest of the walls white, but continue the look with a show-stopping chandelier and black and white bedlinen.

Add definition to an all-white bedroom decorating scheme with black furniture – you can even add a splash of zingy colour like they’ve done here … but don’t ask me to explain the recorder?

Black and white bedrooms aren’t just for modern minimalist lovers (… or self-confessed batchelors!) This monochrome scheme uses black and white bedlinen, a black headboard, and matching vintage trunks to get the look.

Create a black and white bedroom you’ll both love with formal bedlinen, and an eye-catching piece of wall art above the bed. Matching bedside tables and lamps give this contemporary bedroom a formal feel.

Decorating ideas for bedrooms – soft metallics

April 26, 2010

I’ve been getting bags of inspiration from Ideal Home‘s recent feature on ‘blast away the beige with modern neutrals‘ – perfect if you don’t want to add to much colour, but are about as tired of cream as you are of Mondays!

This bedroom design idea is sooooooooo pretty – best ask your hubby for permission first, mind – there’s a lot of girlyness involved! Add softly shimmering shades with with a metallic feature wallpaper, silk cushions and mirrored accessories. Don’t go too crazy with the metallic tones though, highlight just a few areas NOT the whole room – remember sleek, not freak!

Finally keep the furniture simple and not too ornate to avoid the decorating scheme from looking too fussy.

Bedroom design ideas – my top 5!

March 25, 2010

Although I’ve a self-confessed country-style NUT, that doesn’t mean my dream home will look like a glorified gingerbread house (although that would have it’s perks). I seem to take inspiration from a wide range of decorating styles I find along the way, from futuristic modern (quirky metal clock) to gothic punk glamour (fuchsia and black floor lamp in the living room).

Desperately wanting to give my bedroom an update, I’ve been hunting for the latest bedroom design ideas to suit a range of decorating styles this week. Hope you’re as inspired as I am. (Oooh and please send me pictures of any dream-filled schemes you’ve seen)

One for country-style lovers – ok, this would suit my gingerbread house a … treat!

One for pattern lovers – Oodles of sixties-inspired boudoir chic. The Vivienne Westwood wallpaper is fab!

One for modern minimalist lovers – show-stopping lipstick red bedding takes centre stage. The garden clock adds outsized, yet minimal impact (no late for work excuses for you then!)

One to keep him happy – hold up a piece of floral fabric to some men and they’ll run away faster than you can say ‘it’s my new dress you idiot!’ I like this scheme, it’s a happy compromise (as long as those photo frames don’t contain pictures of his ex-girlfriends!)

One for eclectic lovers – plonk modern pieces next to antique-style furniture, and eye-popping colour next to white gloss for a big ol’ bag of eclectic panache!

Alcove bedroom

July 16, 2009

I would have loved an attic hideaway like this when I was younger – very princess in the castle. Even now, I think this bedroom space is a great way to make the most out of an awkward layout – although probably not for the claustrophobic among us. I’d probably liven it up with a bit of colour though … and make sure the door remained unlocked!
