Friday’s Fetish: Country cottage crafts

October 15, 2010

I LOVE everything homespun style! It’s such a cosy and warm look and really gives your home a welcoming, ‘lived-in’ feel… as opposed to a home that screams ‘Oh this? I only use this to sleep?’ or ‘well it’s better than sleeping outside!!’

The cottage craft look is a big country-style trend this year. It’s all about funky patchwork, eclectic embroidery and pretty knits in the latest feel-good fabrics.

Check out these cosy decorating schemes

Create a patchwork-effect feature wall using two different colours of a vintage floral wallpaper

Bedroom designs for those on a budget

September 23, 2010

(… and those who weren’t naughty enough to decide to have THREE summer holidays!) I always go straight to the ‘cash clever decorator’ section of Ideal Home magazine (although I make sure I do it subtly on the tube when surrounded by important-looking people in designer suits). They always have beautiful decorating ideas that won’t hurt your purse’s feelings.

Take this vintage bedroom ideas, all for less than £130!

It’s all about blowsy rose-prints in bold black and white. This is perfect if you want a girly scheme but your husband has vetoed any pink!

Decide where the main focus of the pattern should be – they’ve opted for the bedlinen, but you could go for a feature wall or curtains – and go for a twist with the pattern, the rug here is dominantly black with white flowers while the bedlinen is the opposite. Keep the rest of the scheme light with black accents like the flower wall art.

Feature wallpaper goes cuckoo!

July 13, 2010

Woah! Slow down feature wallpaper, I only asked what your name was!! I love a funky feature wallpaper, and I love the bird trend – especially when it’s incorporated in a summery bedroom design idea, but this is too much for me.

Maybe it’s the combination of the feature wallpaper AND the screen upholstered in exactly the same pattern? Or maybe it’s the fact that a room full of swans isn’t my idea of relaxation? (as much as I love Osborn & Little designs in general) But I just think it’s too much – what do you guys think? Am I being harsh?

Bedroom decorating ideas to tweet about …

June 2, 2010

Just when I thought the decorating world had tired of the bird trend and moved on to other creature comforts (remember that horsey hallway idea?), I decided that I had not! I still love how our feathered friends can pull a scheme together with a feature wallpaper there, or some funky bird-print bedlinen there. It’s all about adding cute accents … not dressing your bedroom up like some sort of birdcage! Think pretty and welcoming, not Alfred Hitchcock.

Check out these beauties …

I love this country bedroom decorating idea – the cottage style bed and layers of lace are stunning. It would be a perfect guest room, allowing friends and family to become their own little night owls.

This bedroom design idea from Copy Cat Chic is a little over the tip for me – reminds me too much of my childhood bedroom … don’t ask! – what I do love is the contrast between the vintage wallpaper and the modern punchy blue table lamps and matching stools.

I’ve popped up this bedroom idea before, but I think this folky bedlinen from John Lewis is adorable, and a lovely light take on the bird trend.

I spotted (or should I say ‘twitched’?) this on Apartment Therapy. Now we’re swaying more towards Alfred Hitchcock style, but it certainly makes for an eye-catching feature in this bedroom.

Decorating ideas for bedrooms – soft metallics

April 26, 2010

I’ve been getting bags of inspiration from Ideal Home‘s recent feature on ‘blast away the beige with modern neutrals‘ – perfect if you don’t want to add to much colour, but are about as tired of cream as you are of Mondays!

This bedroom design idea is sooooooooo pretty – best ask your hubby for permission first, mind – there’s a lot of girlyness involved! Add softly shimmering shades with with a metallic feature wallpaper, silk cushions and mirrored accessories. Don’t go too crazy with the metallic tones though, highlight just a few areas NOT the whole room – remember sleek, not freak!

Finally keep the furniture simple and not too ornate to avoid the decorating scheme from looking too fussy.

Horny decorating trend!

March 2, 2010

What is it with the antler heads floating about at the moment? It seems you can’t swing a dead cat… ok, maybe wrong choice of phrase, but decorating with antlers is a hot trend, nonetheless!

I can’t think of anything worse that having a giant DEER HEAD staring at me whilst eating my cornflakes (or as I creep home late at night – shudder) but I think some of the faux antlers look quite funky.

Instant focal point PLUS sure-fire talking point – I love the idea of painting this to match your scheme … lime green giant stage head, anyone?

… because dark toned highland-style plaid just wouldn’t be complete without some sort of hunting memorabilia? Seriously though, I think this bedroom is as cosy as it says it is.

How many decorating styles does it take to change a living room? Not really a fan of this, I’m afraid.

These are better. No eyes following you around the room, and not too brassy. These hooks create a quirky and eye-catching feature in this hallway.

Friday’s Fetish: plaids

January 15, 2010

According to Rhoda Parry, editor of Country Homes & Interiors, plaids are set to be a hot country decorating trend this winter. Tartans are going bold and brassy (good on them!) and are ideal for adding warmth and cosiness to your home.

The tartan-covered headboard makes a highland statement in this bedroom, chuck on throws for a cosy winter’s night … I might bring one of these to work!

Plaid wallpaper looks great in bathrooms or cloakrooms. I love the soft grey shades and the matching painted panelling.

Friday’s Fetish: English eccentric decorating

January 8, 2010

Who says smart decorating can’t look ‘lived-in’? I love the casual mix-and-match approach to this English Eccentric decorating idea by Ideal Home. A touch of traditional style here, some quirky finishing touches there. Perfect.

Here’s how to get this hot look:

1) Start with a timeless wallpaper with subtle shimmer – a damask design will add a hint of grandeur … daaaarling.

2) Add shapely upholstered furniture – a buttoned back piece never hurt anyone – and team with modern wooden designs.

3) Mix in quirky accessories, eye-catching cushions, and vintage treasures to add a fun twist to the scheme.

This classic-style living room has more staying power than the average child at Disney Land.

Looking for bedroom design ideas?

January 7, 2010

Check out this hotel-style bedroom decorating idea from Ideal Home.

After stretching my purse strings to new lengths over Christmas, I’m definitely liking the logic that if you can’t afford to splash out on monthly trips to luxurious hotels, why not bring the hotel chic feel to your own home?

Here are their top hotel bedroom tips:

1) Go for the biggest bed you can (fine by me!)

2) Build a walk-in wardrobe behind the bed – perfect for hiding all that unwanted clutter

3) Turn your accessories into wall art with wall mounted boxes (nb. designer shoes will look great, scruffy trainers will not!)

4) Go for luxurious bedlinen and sexy cushions

5) Create a make-up station – every girl should have a place for her lotions and potions.

Lunchtime lust! Amazing poolside bedroom

October 27, 2009

This is exactly what I mean by bold and brassy bedrooms! Just when I think us decorating lovers can try our hand at any style trend the interiors world throws at us – along comes a bedroom with a giant SWIMMING POOL IN IT! Oh the jealousy.
