Friday’s Fetish: Decorating with wool

November 26, 2010

Must not talk about Christmas. Must. Not. Talk. About. Christmas. Well if I can’t talk about that, at least let me rabbit on about snuggley and cosy winter decorating ideas – it is almost -20 degrees outside. Ideal Home‘s got some great ideas on how to create a cosy winter retreat… wanna see?

Use fine worsted wools in a palette of greys for a calm, sophisticated bedroom scheme. Throw in a few accents of deep denim blue and use vintage wooden furniture to add warmth to the cool scheme.

Use cosy woollens to keep your bedroom warm and snuggley this winter

Pile in textured woollens and comforting neutrals to add a warm luxurious feel to your living room. Quirky wall art, sconces and ornaments give this living room look a quintessentially British nostalgic feel.

Lunchtime Lust: Sexy and swanky stripes

November 24, 2010

I’m finding myself teetering on the edge of a very steep Christmas cliff at the moment, a mere breath away from plummeting into a world of Christmas decorations, ideas, gift ideas and festive Crafts… so why I’ve still got my balance, I thought I’d continue with some general (albeit it absolutely stunning decorating schemes).

I love these luxurious decorating schemes from Homes & Gardens, they show just how stripes offer the perfect way to make a stylish statement.

An elegant wallpaper with wide horizontal stripes will give a living room the illusion of width.

Use plain linen for both walls, curtains and pelmet, then embellish with wide bands of different coloured velvet ribbon.

Lunchtime Lust: luxe hotel-style decorating

November 22, 2010

No budget to go away this Christmas? Boyfriend not taking your ‘oh I wish I had the budget to go away this Christmas’ hints? Take matters into your own hands by creating the five-star feel in your own home.

Country-house hotel meets private-member’s club, this living room decorating look is all about relaxed sophistication. Go for a simple palette with just two or three colours, and finish with statement accessories in striking shapes.

For a restful bedroom that feels like a proper sanctuary, stick to cool blue, green and aqua with plenty of silver. Start with a shimmering metallic wallpaper, and echo the colours in your curtains and bed linen.

Friday’s fetish: woodland-inspired decorating

October 22, 2010

Thought I’d give you all a break from my Christmas decorating looks on the high street addiction. I’m not the biggest fan of getting really excited about something and realising I have to wait 3 MONTHS for it, so I think it’s best I end the week inspired by something that is a bit more current.

Country Homes & Interiors‘ latest decorating trend is all about taking cue from the Autumn forest with its turning leaves (although the closest tree to my home in London is a mug tree) and abundant wildlife and creating your won cosy nest in rich, warming colours.

Check out these beautiful schemes.

Combine a plain sofa with an armchair in a tree-print fabric for an informal snug-style living room. Add a selection of cushions in different fabrics and a rug in a bold design.

Make a wooden-topped Gustavian-style table the centrepiece of a dining room using teal as the accent colour, dress chairs in loose covers, and of course, choose a fabric in a warm Autumnal pattern.

Can I come in? John Mayer’s New York pad

October 11, 2010

I imagine I feel about as inspired by John Mayer‘s home as Jennifer Aniston feels about his relationship skills. I was expecting it to have a little bit more personality and warmth, but instead it seems he’s paid the Armani Casa design team to create a grown up pad which although contains absolutely STUNNING furniture pieces and furnishings, doesn’t really say much about the musician, himself.

Am I being too harsh?

Check out Apartment Therapy for more pictures of his home, as featured in Elle Decor.

Getting excited about Transformer 3!

October 8, 2010

I love the Transformers movies and could look at sneak peaks and spoilers all day, BUT I’m no slacker, I wouldn’t DREAM of spending my day do anything that wasn’t related to the world of decorating…

… so here’s a tour around Transformer 3 director, Michael Bay‘s home in Miami, as featured in Elledecor.com!

Bedroom design ideas – the good, the bad, the ugly

October 8, 2010

I come across a lot of weird and wonderful bedroom designs in my job. Some make so jealous that I go home and look at my own bedroom like it’s a cheating love rat. Others horrify to the point where I want to run home and hide under my duvet in case they chase after me!

Today is one such day. A ‘why do I live in England again?’ bedroom a ‘should I call the police?’ bedroom and a ‘feels like it’s constantly watching me’ bedroom.

The good – size-of-a-swimming pool ensuite bath, utter luxury and the fact that it looks out to the tropical ocean aside, this beautiful bedroom is warm, inviting and has bags of five-star style.

The bad – my only concern is that those ‘stone accents’ were once this resident/prisoner’s only windows and doors?

The ugly – I don’t know if it’s the cobweb-like canopy or the wooden skull/CLAW bed frame, but there something very eery about this bedroom design for me. What do you think?

Monochrome Mondays! Stripe not strike!

October 4, 2010

Why can’t answers to Monday’s questions be a little bit more black and white?? Q: How can I possibly get to work following the tube strike? A: By some sort of giant bird? Q: Do have the stomach for my Monday gym class as much as I had a stomach for a food-filled Saturday? A: Depends if there was a prize involved. Ultimately, the answers are baffling!

What will cheer me out from beneath a cup of coffee, though? Easy – whisk me away in beautiful monochrome decorating schemes, please!

Use wall space above your media unit to display photos – stick to black and white pics and frames for a coherent look.

Acceptable in the 80s

September 28, 2010

Check out the latest modern decorating trend – hits of the 80s. According to the modern style gurus at Livingetc, ‘the decade that gave us mobile phones, mineral water and Madonna is being reinvented.’ Now that’s what I call power dressing!

Layers of grey and light-diffusing blinds make for a moody, sensual room. And after two decades of neutral schemes, pops of vibrant colour are back.

Eighties design loved huge in a big way, but today’s loft living requires a slouchy sofa – in blue velvet, of course.

roomenvy - eighties-inspired bedroom

Hip to be square. ‘Look at me’ demanded the most iconic furniture from the Eighties, and those confident shapes are back. This time, though, the angles are bolder and shots of graphic colour add modern edge.

Industrial materials were all over Eighties furniture, but 21st century utility plays with scale, like an unexpected mix of castors on this table.

Summer of Love: beautiful bedrooms

September 16, 2010

Ah, the bedroom. The room in which I enjoy my ABSOLUTE favourite past-time. Yes… sleep. What did you think I was talking about?!

So, to continue my Summer of Love series, ladies and gentleman, I present to you my top three bedrooms:

1) I love EVERYTHING about this room – from the wooden-beamed ceiling to the pared-back four-poster, it’s an utter dream come true. Splashes of bold colour on the cushions and throw give the look a lovely exotic feel too.

2) On the other-hand, if Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen‘s style is more up your street, this uber-glam bedroom has it all. Dark moody walls, a statement chandelier and a SERIOUS bedframe. Check out the fairy lights wrapped round the headboard too!

3) And finally, for contemporary design nuts, this blue and white bedroom certainly makes an impression. I love the low bed and the oversized floor lamp – and the graphic Vivienne Westwood wallpaper definitely packs a punch!
