A cuter bedroom decorating idea?

April 12, 2011

GAH! I can’t decide between this beautiful vintage bedroom and yesterday’s cute-as-pie guest bedroom?? What do you guys think?

Check out this photo gallery of 5 steps to a vintage-style bedroom

My favourite idea has to be the lace wall stencil and jewellery display! Never has buying new jewellery been so justifiable in the interior design style stakes!

The cutest bedroom decorating idea…

April 11, 2011

Ok, it’s a bit of a toss up between this and another gorgeous look actually, the other one I’ll save for tomorrow… (what? I’ve got to keep some mystery!?) Anyway, inspired by my poor excuse for a hotel-style guest bedroom retreat (ahem… think ‘sofa bed’) I’ve been taking notes from Housetohome’s latest spring decorating idea – 5 steps to a pretty guest bedroom.

Follow the link to their 5 easy bedroom decorating ideas… Enjoy!

Friday’s Fetish: Breaking the rules!

January 7, 2011

If like me, you’re already fed up with new year resolutions and good intentions, then a little chic rule breaking is in order…

I can’t be bothered to detox – I don’t like the headaches – and forget all that clearing out the clutter, this year, I’m embracing it! You see, chucking out the rulebook and going against the grain is liberating. Which is why I HAVE to share with you these little gems of inspiration I saw in the January edition of Livingetc.

Never clash bright colours? No-way!

Bring on the brights! Sunshine shades of yellow, orange and fuchsia sings when used in blocks – not patterned – and is calmed with pale grey flooring, the odd black accent and natural wood and stone accessories.

Brilliant blue and gorgeous green

Hmm, blue and green should never be seen, goes the maxim, but check out this picture! Drama, style and the perfect mix of contemporary traditional accessories make this dining room so inviting – anyone for a cuppa?

Who says a fireplace defines a room? It doesn’t have to be the focal point – so passé! And zoning doesn’t have to be ordered either. I love the way this room is broken up with an off-centre charcoal grey – to define a work zone – and a totally contrasting bold Toile print for relaxing.

And what’s more, all this rule breaking is soooo on-trend for S/S 2011: bright blues and greens on eyes were all over the catwalk and clashing colour-block patterns and designs were also a major feature of all the big runway shows.

Friday’s Fetish: designer hotel rooms

November 19, 2010

It’s Friday, it’s cold outside, so obviously I’m daydreaming about holidays to foreign lands. I’ve fixed my sights on the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, because (thanks to Design Milk) I’ve just found a place to stay that’s far from the sterile space of a British budget hotel.

LLOVE. No, not a typo, but the name of this amazing exhibition/hotel that you can actually stay in! I’ve always wanted to be a performance artist – ok, not strictly true, but this creative collaboration between Japanese and Dutch designers would be the perfect place to launch my career/ sleep in incredible one-of-a-kind surroundings. And unique is definitely the word… just look at these bedrooms!

Staying in a space with this maxed-out striped effect on the customised wallpaper, floors, and everything in between would be like sleeping inside the lining of a giant Paul Smith suit (I would imagine).

Bix box, little box… this bedroom is an exact replica of a dilapidated traditional Japanese-style room, only with really comfy looking beds. Take note of the paper screens that form the walls – a great style idea to steal.

If you love the great outdoors, perhaps this is one for you? Love the coat hangers on the tree branches and the buried bath tub. It’s all a little Midsummer Night’s Dream, the updated version.

And from one fairytale to another… what’s not to love about this GIANT sculptural bed? Goldilocks has no problems with me saying, this bedroom is juuuusssst right. Ok, where do I book?

Chinese whispers: Oriental decorating trends

November 18, 2010

This may be an unofficial trend, but I’ve noticed a lot of Chinoiserie and Japonica on the home decorating front recently. Far more elegant than my usual Oriental tastes (such as late-night Chinese takeaways, and laughing at Japanese B-movies) this style always looks, well, beautiful. It’s certainly got timeless appeal (unlike my aforementioned far-eastern passtimes).

Jade green soft furnishings, black lacquered Chinese cabinets, a minimalistic four-poster and lashings of white – this bedroom look is crisp, clean and modern.

Inspired by nature, this opulent dressing room with its hand-painted wallpaper makes me want to get all dressed up and head to the opera… to see Madame Butterfly! Dark wood, a gilt-edged mirror and that amazing shade of jade. Homes & Gardens has literally turned me green with envy.

Even when it’s pared-down, the embroidered cherry blossom motif on this Pied a Terre bed linen from House of Fraser endows this bedroom with pure sophistication. Shuttered windows, vibrant silk cushions, fan detailing… I’m all a-flutter!

Cute girl’s bedroom idea

November 5, 2010

Ooooh la laaa! What a gorgeous girl’s bedroom decorating idea from Ideal Home. I would decorate my own room like this if I was sure that over 80% of my friends WOULDN’T suddenly wonder my a) age and b) nationality.

Here’s how to get the look:

1) Go for a grown up theme. If she’s grown out of princesses, then at least inject some girly glamour with a chic wallpaper that makes a statement.

2) Add more colour with wall stickers. They’re a great way to inject colour without overdoing it, plus they’re removable… in case she changes her mind/brings her boyfriend back from university 7 years later.

3) Go for built in storage behind the bed. This unit is the perfect house for everything from photo frames to books and CDs.

Bedroom design ideas – the good, the bad, the ugly

October 8, 2010

I come across a lot of weird and wonderful bedroom designs in my job. Some make so jealous that I go home and look at my own bedroom like it’s a cheating love rat. Others horrify to the point where I want to run home and hide under my duvet in case they chase after me!

Today is one such day. A ‘why do I live in England again?’ bedroom a ‘should I call the police?’ bedroom and a ‘feels like it’s constantly watching me’ bedroom.

The good – size-of-a-swimming pool ensuite bath, utter luxury and the fact that it looks out to the tropical ocean aside, this beautiful bedroom is warm, inviting and has bags of five-star style.

The bad – my only concern is that those ‘stone accents’ were once this resident/prisoner’s only windows and doors?

The ugly – I don’t know if it’s the cobweb-like canopy or the wooden skull/CLAW bed frame, but there something very eery about this bedroom design for me. What do you think?

Bedroom designs for those on a budget

September 23, 2010

(… and those who weren’t naughty enough to decide to have THREE summer holidays!) I always go straight to the ‘cash clever decorator’ section of Ideal Home magazine (although I make sure I do it subtly on the tube when surrounded by important-looking people in designer suits). They always have beautiful decorating ideas that won’t hurt your purse’s feelings.

Take this vintage bedroom ideas, all for less than £130!

It’s all about blowsy rose-prints in bold black and white. This is perfect if you want a girly scheme but your husband has vetoed any pink!

Decide where the main focus of the pattern should be – they’ve opted for the bedlinen, but you could go for a feature wall or curtains – and go for a twist with the pattern, the rug here is dominantly black with white flowers while the bedlinen is the opposite. Keep the rest of the scheme light with black accents like the flower wall art.

Summer of Love: beautiful bedrooms

September 16, 2010

Ah, the bedroom. The room in which I enjoy my ABSOLUTE favourite past-time. Yes… sleep. What did you think I was talking about?!

So, to continue my Summer of Love series, ladies and gentleman, I present to you my top three bedrooms:

1) I love EVERYTHING about this room – from the wooden-beamed ceiling to the pared-back four-poster, it’s an utter dream come true. Splashes of bold colour on the cushions and throw give the look a lovely exotic feel too.

2) On the other-hand, if Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen‘s style is more up your street, this uber-glam bedroom has it all. Dark moody walls, a statement chandelier and a SERIOUS bedframe. Check out the fairy lights wrapped round the headboard too!

3) And finally, for contemporary design nuts, this blue and white bedroom certainly makes an impression. I love the low bed and the oversized floor lamp – and the graphic Vivienne Westwood wallpaper definitely packs a punch!
