Swingin’ Sixties bedroom

August 3, 2011

As I slowly but surely decorate my house – a Victorian end-of-terrace – I’m always on the lookout for inspiration. The next room on my radar is the spare bedroom, which has been built into the attic. Unlike most attic rooms, it’s spacious and bright and benefits from lots of natural light, so I’ve decided to take advantage of this and be bold – it’s all too easy to paint a room white or cream in my opinion…

Laurie, our deputy chief sub, knows I love all things retro, as well as bright colours and punchy prints. “I’ve found some orange and red stripey wallpaper – you’ll love it!” or “lime green table lamps? I’ll just email those to Em…” Which is why this gorgeous, Sixties-inspired upholstered bed and green walls hit the spot for me. I couldn’t help but wake up with a smile on my face each morning if this was my bed. Just got to convince the other half now, and I have a back-up plan if he’s not sold: the same geometric print, but on the walls and soft furnishings instead.

I almost prefer this, as I think the blue adds another dimension. Not sure about the decorative pineapples on the bedside table, though… They’re a bit much – even for me! Emily

Summer lovin’

June 21, 2011

It’s the longest day of the year today – the summer solstice. The eternal optimist in me is holding out for the season to actually get itself into gear and give us some hot summer weather, which is probably why this gorgeous Indian-summer inspired bedroom has caught my eye.

Jewel tones and florals - two great trends in one

Yes, it’s garish; yes, it’s bright, but there’s something seriously glossy and almost Bollywood-esque about this scheme that makes me want to curl up on that four poster bed and relax during a hot summer day (and hope for someone to bring me some iced tea). I think the clean white lines of the bed break up the room perfectly, so it doesn’t look too overpowering, plus that wallpaper manages to capture the floral and brights trends in one go. Wicker and distressed accessories, like that gorgeous turqouise wardrobe, also add to the overall brash and bold effect. I’ve also been coveting a floral throw for ages, so it’s no wonder that there’s one included here too!

What do you think – too bold and bright, or just right? Let me know in the comments!

You snooze, you lose?

February 23, 2011

I’ll admit to something: this morning, I really, really didn’t want to leave my bed. Who can blame me though – cold, rainy, being crammed on the tube on the way to work – it’s a good job I get to browse through lots of lovely rooms for a sizeable chunk of the day or I would be in a permanently bad mood when I get into the office! When I’m squeezed into a carriage on the Northern line and am pining for my bed, I do tend to browse bedrooms over my coffee when I actually get into the office.

Dark and mysterious - I love it!

I think if I was lucky enough to have a bedroom like this, I would find it even harder to leave it on days like today. Black or nearly black walls are hard to pull off, especially with dark gloss furniture, but this four poster number pulls it off thanks to the crisp white bedding and lovely textures in the carpet, rug and luxe fur throw. I think you could only really make this work in a room with lots of light, otherwise that anglepoise might result in a hideously large electricity bill, but wouldn’t I love to wake up in this every day….

What do you think – beautiful boudoir or too dark and dreary? Let me know in the comments!

The big V Day

February 11, 2011

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you can’t help but notice that the most romantic day of the year is upon us again. That’s right, Valentines Day is but a few days away, and even if you reject it as a commercial holiday designed to make money for the greetings card industry (oh, you unromantic types…) it’s a great opportunity to give your bedroom a bit of va-va-voom. Ther are loads of really quick and easy ways to glam up your boudoir – here are a few five-minute ideas I’ve seen this week.

Peeled grapes? Don't mind if I do...

A chaise longue adds instant sex appeal to any room, and I’m loving this purple number. Perfect for being waited on hand and foot by an adoring partner this Valentine’s Day. I love the contrast with the wooden floors, although maybe the curtains are a tad too much.

Sparkly!

As you’ll know after my post the other day, I love orange. And if there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to add some sparkle to your bedroom it’s some cunningly-placed fairy lights. So of course, this headboard-esque display is right up my alley! Grown-up and glam enough for even the most traditional of rooms, it will add some serious mood-lighting to your bedroom.

This room has serious sex appeal

A little too much purple perhaps (not really a fan) but love the multiple screen action that’s going on here. The four poster bed is given a new lease of life by using sliding Japanese-style screens rather than hanging drapes so it looks bang up-to-date, plus the dressing area screen is perfect for adding some old-school glamour to proceedings. Again, though, lose the velvet drapes… just too much purple for me.

What do you think? And are you celebrating St Valentine’s this year, or hibernating until the 14th is over and done with?

Summer of Love: beautiful bedrooms

September 16, 2010

Ah, the bedroom. The room in which I enjoy my ABSOLUTE favourite past-time. Yes… sleep. What did you think I was talking about?!

So, to continue my Summer of Love series, ladies and gentleman, I present to you my top three bedrooms:

1) I love EVERYTHING about this room – from the wooden-beamed ceiling to the pared-back four-poster, it’s an utter dream come true. Splashes of bold colour on the cushions and throw give the look a lovely exotic feel too.

2) On the other-hand, if Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen‘s style is more up your street, this uber-glam bedroom has it all. Dark moody walls, a statement chandelier and a SERIOUS bedframe. Check out the fairy lights wrapped round the headboard too!

3) And finally, for contemporary design nuts, this blue and white bedroom certainly makes an impression. I love the low bed and the oversized floor lamp – and the graphic Vivienne Westwood wallpaper definitely packs a punch!

Feature wallpaper goes cuckoo!

July 13, 2010

Woah! Slow down feature wallpaper, I only asked what your name was!! I love a funky feature wallpaper, and I love the bird trend – especially when it’s incorporated in a summery bedroom design idea, but this is too much for me.

Maybe it’s the combination of the feature wallpaper AND the screen upholstered in exactly the same pattern? Or maybe it’s the fact that a room full of swans isn’t my idea of relaxation? (as much as I love Osborn & Little designs in general) But I just think it’s too much – what do you guys think? Am I being harsh?

Decorating ideas with linens

June 5, 2010

Whenever I look for a super-quick bedroom update or living room revamp I go straight for bedlinen/throws or cushions – colourful, packed with a personality to suit yours, fairly inexpensive and easy! BUT WAIT, look at these other ways to give your decorating scheme a makeover with linens. My new duvet cover looks positively DULL in comparison – but then Livingetc often has that effect on me!

Reveal the glamorous side of linen by choosing a glossy finish to upholster a headboard…

Bedroom decorating ideas to tweet about …

June 2, 2010

Just when I thought the decorating world had tired of the bird trend and moved on to other creature comforts (remember that horsey hallway idea?), I decided that I had not! I still love how our feathered friends can pull a scheme together with a feature wallpaper there, or some funky bird-print bedlinen there. It’s all about adding cute accents … not dressing your bedroom up like some sort of birdcage! Think pretty and welcoming, not Alfred Hitchcock.

Check out these beauties …

I love this country bedroom decorating idea – the cottage style bed and layers of lace are stunning. It would be a perfect guest room, allowing friends and family to become their own little night owls.

This bedroom design idea from Copy Cat Chic is a little over the tip for me – reminds me too much of my childhood bedroom … don’t ask! – what I do love is the contrast between the vintage wallpaper and the modern punchy blue table lamps and matching stools.

I’ve popped up this bedroom idea before, but I think this folky bedlinen from John Lewis is adorable, and a lovely light take on the bird trend.

I spotted (or should I say ‘twitched’?) this on Apartment Therapy. Now we’re swaying more towards Alfred Hitchcock style, but it certainly makes for an eye-catching feature in this bedroom.

Lunchtime Lust: black and white bedrooms

May 11, 2010

Everyone’s chatting about black and white bedrooms this week, and although I am trying to egg summer on with chat of vintage florals and beach-hut inspired decorating, I’m afraid I’m going to have to hop on the bandwagon! These bedroom decorating ideas are simply dreamy!

And you don’t have to go all-out with all-black walls and white accents (quite the intimidating look!), instead, add definition with black wallpaper or monochrome bedlinen.

Be inspired by these stunning designs.

Create a feature wall with a stunning and shimmering black bedroom wallpaper, keep the rest of the walls white, but continue the look with a show-stopping chandelier and black and white bedlinen.

Add definition to an all-white bedroom decorating scheme with black furniture – you can even add a splash of zingy colour like they’ve done here … but don’t ask me to explain the recorder?

Black and white bedrooms aren’t just for modern minimalist lovers (… or self-confessed batchelors!) This monochrome scheme uses black and white bedlinen, a black headboard, and matching vintage trunks to get the look.

Create a black and white bedroom you’ll both love with formal bedlinen, and an eye-catching piece of wall art above the bed. Matching bedside tables and lamps give this contemporary bedroom a formal feel.

General Election time!

May 6, 2010

Forgive me, something’s on my mind this morning, hmmmmm, wonder what it is?

We’ve all got a massive decision to make today, I hope everyone has managed to get their votes in. I guess all we can do now is wait (and try to avoid last-minute campaigners … I ran into a rather nymph-like creature on the bus home last night, who scared me to my very core!) .

In the meantime, I’ll try my best to distract you … what? I said, ‘try’!
