Hang it!

September 2, 2011

Does anybody out there have problems choosing wallpaper? Once you’ve got over the ‘shall I paint or paper it?’ dilemma, you’ve then got a minefield of choices to find that perfect look. I like a good wallpaper – a trendy paint colour’s all very well but it doesn’t expressive your individuality to the same extent. It can also reinforce that modern or traditional look you’re after. Here’s a sneak preview of the Johnson house in December’s 25BH  issue to illustrate how tastefully (and cleverly) it can be used. Bit flowery for me though…

Bedroom wallpaper ideas

September 6, 2010

Want to know how to create the ultimate hotel-style bedroom? Why not find inspiration in a … boutique hotel! Ok, maybe it’s a little bit sneaky, but I love how glamorous this swanky Irish hotel room is – and it couldn’t be easier to recreate the look.

1) Go for a bold bedroom wallpaper. Dark wallpaper is a surefire way to add drama, and you can always create a feature wall if you think papering all four walls will scare both your husband and yourself!

2) Grab plenty of plush cushions. Pile on the luxury with a row of cushions on a rich damask pattern.

3) Choose an oversized headboard. Make your bed the focal point with a huge headbaord that picks up one of the colours in your wallpaper.

4) Finish off the look with a stylish bed runner. A luxurious runner perks up plain white bedlinen – and it can be changed with the seasons for a speedy update.

Top tip: convince your other half you need to do ‘interior design research’ by booking into The Twelve in Galway, Ireland – it looks gorgeous … hint, hint.

Bird wallpaper – the good, the bad and the ugly

July 29, 2010

It’s official, I’m completely torn by bird wallpapers. In some ways I find them adorable and the perfect finishing touch to a country-style scheme – especially a pretty little guest bedroom. However, in other ways I find them … well … quite frightening actually. The antique bird or retro bird ‘look’ just isn’t for me.

Here’s how far by bird wallpaper love goes…

The good – cute, country and destined for a guest bedroom, this simple bird wallpaper adds a welcoming touch.

The bad – hmmmmmm, a retro bird feature wall isn’t for me, but I’d certainly give this Seventies-inspired print marks for an eye-catching focal point.

The ugly – this is decorating hell for me. Too many birds, too many antiques, I would feel like I was on a period drama set, not my actual living room!

Lunchtime Lust: black and white bedrooms

May 11, 2010

Everyone’s chatting about black and white bedrooms this week, and although I am trying to egg summer on with chat of vintage florals and beach-hut inspired decorating, I’m afraid I’m going to have to hop on the bandwagon! These bedroom decorating ideas are simply dreamy!

And you don’t have to go all-out with all-black walls and white accents (quite the intimidating look!), instead, add definition with black wallpaper or monochrome bedlinen.

Be inspired by these stunning designs.

Create a feature wall with a stunning and shimmering black bedroom wallpaper, keep the rest of the walls white, but continue the look with a show-stopping chandelier and black and white bedlinen.

Add definition to an all-white bedroom decorating scheme with black furniture – you can even add a splash of zingy colour like they’ve done here … but don’t ask me to explain the recorder?

Black and white bedrooms aren’t just for modern minimalist lovers (… or self-confessed batchelors!) This monochrome scheme uses black and white bedlinen, a black headboard, and matching vintage trunks to get the look.

Create a black and white bedroom you’ll both love with formal bedlinen, and an eye-catching piece of wall art above the bed. Matching bedside tables and lamps give this contemporary bedroom a formal feel.

Hot decorating trend: blossom chic

April 7, 2010

You can’t swing a style-hungry cat around the decorating world without running into the latest blossom trend. It’s the hot motif for Spring, especially in fresh lilac tones, and BOY are they pretty!! Plus, they make a fantastic partner for versatile neutrals, so they’re easy to introduce to your scheme.

Creamy neutrals on the walls, floors and upholstery with a splash of blossom on the curtains. They’ve picked out the lilac from the print and repeated it in co-ordinating accessories. Love the deep-purple footstool.

A metallic-finsih blossom wallpaper works beautifully with purple for a calm bedroom scheme. Add amethyst accents for warmth and finish off with sparkling crystal details. Boudoir-chic alert!

‘The Room I Envy’ by Helen of The Stencil Library

Looking for bedroom decorating ideas? Or bedroom wallpaper inspiration? Helen Morris, founder of The Stencil Library, shows us her favourite scheme.

“Some years ago The Stencil Library created a collection of  Chinoiserie stencils based on hand painted wallpapers from the 18th century.  My blue Chinoiserie guest room was a perfect place to display them. Although  the designs are true to the period my choice of colour is not.

The room is  dominated by a tall bed, storage is built under it. This is a big room with a  comparatively small window so I have tried to maximise light by use of paint,  mirror and crystal.  I used silver acrylic paint as the base colour then  added burgundy and blue over it. The colour changes in intensity with the light.

This room sparkles when the afternoon sun hits it. The stencilling is embellished with over four hundred crystals fastened onto flowers and birds eyes. Every month we host a tour around our stencilled home. This room is a favourite with many visitors. I’m rather fond of it, too.”

Anyone going to the Ideal Home Show this year?

March 12, 2010

I LOVED the Ideal Home Show last year and cannot wait to go again. I’ve been begging the deputy editor of Ideal Home, Jen Morgan, to give me some sneaky insider gossip on what to expect from Ideal Home‘s stand – apparently it’s all about getting the designer decorating look on an everyday budget.

And as if that wasn’t enough to get me all excited … she agreed to let me quiz her on the day about her favourite clever ‘luxe for less’ ideas! I’ll be sure to pop up the video as soon as it’s ready. In the meantime, check out my favourite decorating ideas from last year’s show – really gave me the motivation to make my bedroom work harder! See you from 20th March to April 5th (I’ll be the decorating addict WOOPING by the Ideal Home stand).

Girl’s bedroom wallpaper

March 11, 2010

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mums out there who would decorate a girls bedroom with such beautiful wallpaper and not rob it for themselves – I’m not convinced I would be able to make that choice, given this pretty pink design!!

I adore the exotic wallpaper and matching detailed side table – oh and there’s the magical daybed and Eastern-inspired linens. Simply beautiful. I definitely think this will last them longer than a feature wall of Miley Cyrus … or whatever they insist they’ll never tire of!!

Lunchtime Lust: get the folk spirit

March 8, 2010

Give your bedroom a hippy hippy shake-up with bright colours, floral patterns and pretty trimmings. This funky decorating idea from Ideal Home is doing nothing to shake my festival fever!!

Here’s how to get this airy fairy look …

1) Keep the main parts of the room understated so that your folk pieces can take centre stage – they deserve it!!

2) Go for detailed cushions – printed, striped, embroidered and embellished – oooh and if you can, go for pompom trims, they’re big news for spring. (Pssssst M&S have some gorgeous lil’ numbers.)

3) Opt for bedlinen with a delicate trim – white bedding with an embroidered edge won’t overpower the look.

4) Upholstered a footstool in a bold fabric to make a feature at the end of the bed.

5) Complete the look with pretty floral prints to add colour to your walls.
