Hall of fame

July 22, 2011

I have a dining room with an under-stairs alcove, that I’ve been wondering what to do with for a while – we’ve eventually decided to put a sideboard there and use it as a bar-type area, complete with drinks tray and swish glasses. It can be an awkward space to decorate though, which is why I thought this hallway space, below, is my ‘room of envy’ this week.

Stencilled leaves trailing down the wall in that under-stairs alcove make a great alternative to plain paint or wallpaper, and the chair isn’t just decorative but practical too – there’s times we all need to sit down to tie laces/take shoes off, etc.

The pillar at the left corner of the picture adds a Grecian-style touch to the space, and it’s a great way of showing what can be done with a small, awkward area the size of a postage stamp!

Christmas is coming!

July 8, 2010

Too soon to talk about Christmas? Hmmmmmmm, perhaps (although I swear I heard Christmas tunes in September last year?) Anyway, don’t panic, I’m not talking about getting ready for Christmas just yet … I’m talking about ‘Christmas Press Show Season!’

This is one of my favourite times of year, where I get to rush off in the baking summer heat (from the tubes, at least) to see what Christmas decorating ideas the high street has in store for us, while stuffing my face with Christmas cake – just what I need before I go on holiday!

Anyway, sorry I haven’t been posting more this week, but I’ll be sure to give you a lil round-up when I’ve seen them all.

In the meantime, here’s a sneak preview of what John Lewis has in store….

Use a cheating boyfriend for crafts!

April 21, 2010

How to get revenge on a cheating boyfriend? Turn their best shirts into a lust-worthy statement furniture piece. I once heard a lovely tale about a girl paying back her terrible boyfriend by removing all the buttons from his work shirts, so he had to go into his morning with his shirt WIDE open (or that’s what she and I hoped!)

I think this funky craft idea from Livingetc is even BETTER! Getting your friends and family to rest their bottoms on his favourite work shirt is the perfect pay back – plus a fun craft idea that’ll brighten up your day even if he hasn’t!

NB. there’s no variation of this for his sports car metalwork, but I’ll look into it.

Weird and wonderful

September 18, 2009

This room has caused a bit of a stir in the office – but I love it! There’s nothing better than a whacky chair to brighten up a Friday afternoon.

Even the lamp (which I swear is my Gran’s) seems to work in this quirky colour scheme.

Stylish stripes

April 2, 2009

Tired of your carpet? The graphic striped flooring in this living room makes as much of a statement as the rich aqua wall colour. Team with an upholstered chair in a similar fabric for extra pizzazz!

Perfect home office

November 11, 2008

This home office works really well tucked in the corner of the bedroom. My favourite things about it are –

  • Simple desk with plenty of storage spots down the side
  • A white pin board for a clean look
  • The desk lamp is functional yet still homely
  • They’ve opted for a stylish chair – not a swivel chair that’s difficult to blend into a room scheme
