Tricky conservatories

September 15, 2009

This might not be a popular view but, in decorating terms, conservatories can either be very right or very wrong.

One of the things that’s difficult to balance is the fact that conservatories are historical designs (the Victorians made conservatories popular for housing their plants) made from very modern materials – so it’s often tricky to get that ‘country-style’ feel.

The idea of having a mini glasshouse is lovely, fill it with plants, great, but then to over-clutter it with wicker furniture and chintzy fabric is not for me.

Check out this classic example – but  you might need to rest your eyes afterwards!

Gardener’s den

June 18, 2009

I love this conservatory.  Admittedly its not the neatest scheme around, but I can just imagine repotting some plants or relaxing back in a big comfy arm chair.  Sometimes mess is best!

Let the light in

June 12, 2009

What do you do when the days get colder and your beautiful outdoor dining area goes to waste for the next few months? The owners of this conservatory have the right idea. By opting for a glass roof, the space gets just as much light as if they were outside, they get a clear view of the beautiful outdoor surroundings –  and they don’t ever have to worry about rain interrupting their meal!

Garden hideaway

June 12, 2009

While checking out some of the designs featured at the Chelsea Flower Show, I fell in love with this beautiful summer garden room designed by Marston & Langinger. By wallpapering the inside with cute cherry wallpaper, it really feels like an extension of the house, as opposed to your traditional orangery. Now i’m going to spend my time daydreaming about my own secret getaway!

I love the idea of creating a room in the garden, it’s the perfect way to get extra space without spending money on an extension. This summer retreat is ideal for lazy evenings – all you need is a couple of comfy seats, some bunting and you’re set!

Totally tropical

August 8, 2008

I think this is the perfect theme for a conservatory. I like how they’ve used plenty of plants and fabrics with floral prints to give a hot tropical feel – it’ll feel sunny even though it will probably be raining outside!
