Behind closed doors…

June 11, 2012

I know we feature houses of all shapes and sizes – we don’t discriminate here at 25 Beautiful Homes – but there’s something particularly pleasing to see that an unassuming exterior can hide the proverbial Englishman’s castle (or Welsh, Scots or Irish, for that matter!). The homes that provide BH readers with most inspiration aren’t necessarily those that are packed full of quirky features or expensive ‘objet’ but rather places that reflect the owners’ personalities and which work as a whole. For example 1930s semis tend to appear rather staid from the outside, but step through the door of this one and you definitely get a feeling this is a place that’s been put together lovingly – with knick-knacks and mementos that have a special sentiment. Like it? Why not take the full house tour?

Have you got a house – big or small – that you think could grace our pages? We’d love to see it! Just email a selection of room pics to me at sean_o’

The devil is in the detail…

Feature wall with flair

May 28, 2012

When it comes to decor I’m simple-minded, if you get my meaning. I’m not one for fuss, but I still admire those who can put together lots of ideas and make it work as a whole. Take a look at this detail with its feature wall and oriental console table, around which there’s all manner of vintage accessories with a vase of understated flowers at its heart. Surely it shouldn’t work, but it does!

Pretty as a picture…

Table Envy

April 18, 2012

Now I know that I showed you some great hallway examples not so long ago, but I couldn’t resist blogging about this little beauty. Taken from one of our upcoming homes in the June issue of 25 Beautiful Homes (on sale 3rd May – don’t miss it!), I think it’s a great example of how you can make the most of a small space.

There’s a real combination of styles here, but the ornate wooden console table really comes into its own set against such a neutral background.

Love it. Want it.

Passing through

November 24, 2011

Hallways can be boring. There’s no doubt about it, it’s a hard room to make attractive – more often than not it’s simply used as a dumping ground for coats and shoes. However, this picture, from a former Georgian vicarage in Hampshire, makes achieving an elegant hallway look easy. It’s elegant yet cosy, and I love the warm wood mixed with limestone floor tiles and a cool pale-blue backdrop (and of course a dog curled up on a rug – who can resist?).

The fact you can see right through to the back of the house adds an element of light to the room, and the chunky wood console table is the ideal place for storing keys and post, with a mirror for last-minute appearance checks before you head out the door. What do you think of this room? We’d love to hear your thoughts on how you’ve decorated your own hallways.

Hallway decorating ideas on a shoestring

January 14, 2010

Why is it that the tighter my monthly budget (silly January) the more I look for ways to decorate my home? It’s the whole ‘I’m unhappy about how much I’ve overspent, so I really should buy a new outfit to cheer me up’ scenario!

Luckily allaboutyou have some great budget decorating ideas. In fact, this hallway update will cost you under £300. Now you could use this money to buy a new dress … or make an fabulous entrance in another way!!

Mirror mirror, on the walls

This hallway takes British patriotism to a whole new level – but personally, the cracked glass walls and shrine like set up are less Rule Britannia and more creepy for me. I like the eclectic idea though, and tucking extra seating under the console table is a great way to make extra use of the space.

Half and half

Sometimes less is more when it comes to wallpaper. If you don’t want to cover your whole wall in a pattern, why not team it with smart painted panelling. This hallway has oodles of sophisticated style.

My favourite things about this hallway are the gallery of photos in the paneling above the console table and the beautiful wallpaper on the lower half of the wall.
