It’s almost time for a big old month of festive entertaining, and while I’m distracted by all the Christmas decorating ideas for dining rooms, I also want to get the main look right for all year round. There’s nothing worse than stripping off your Christmas decorations to find a dull and lifeless scheme… as if the end of the party season isn’t testing enough!

Easy dinner party ideas – yum!

August 13, 2010

I love these easy peasy dinner party ideas by celebrity chef Jo Pratt. It’s tough enough trying to cater for a fruitarian here and a cheese-hater there, but how do you set a beautiful table for your friends and family to enjoy? Jo has the answer!

What do you think? Oooh and does anyone have any suggestions for themed dinner parties?

Christmas is coming!

July 8, 2010

Too soon to talk about Christmas? Hmmmmmmm, perhaps (although I swear I heard Christmas tunes in September last year?) Anyway, don’t panic, I’m not talking about getting ready for Christmas just yet … I’m talking about ‘Christmas Press Show Season!’

This is one of my favourite times of year, where I get to rush off in the baking summer heat (from the tubes, at least) to see what Christmas decorating ideas the high street has in store for us, while stuffing my face with Christmas cake – just what I need before I go on holiday!

Anyway, sorry I haven’t been posting more this week, but I’ll be sure to give you a lil round-up when I’ve seen them all.

In the meantime, here’s a sneak preview of what John Lewis has in store….

Use a cheating boyfriend for crafts!

April 21, 2010

How to get revenge on a cheating boyfriend? Turn their best shirts into a lust-worthy statement furniture piece. I once heard a lovely tale about a girl paying back her terrible boyfriend by removing all the buttons from his work shirts, so he had to go into his morning with his shirt WIDE open (or that’s what she and I hoped!)

I think this funky craft idea from Livingetc is even BETTER! Getting your friends and family to rest their bottoms on his favourite work shirt is the perfect pay back – plus a fun craft idea that’ll brighten up your day even if he hasn’t!

NB. there’s no variation of this for his sports car metalwork, but I’ll look into it.

Classic country farmhouse dining room

April 9, 2010

Love the classic country farmhouse look? You don’t have to live next to a herd of cows to create the rustic look – just invest in a few key buys, then close your eyes and pretend that busy main road is actually a babbling brook

Keep the basics simple, with a chunky wooden table and chairs and plain crockery. Add personality with accessories like bright bowls and decorations that can be updated as the seasons change. Put a bunch of flowers in a pretty pitcher instead of a more formal vase, and go for an oil cloth to protect your table from spills.

Country decorating idea – the simple life

March 25, 2010

Yes, I know it’s not the same as being taken away to a lovely romantic log cabin in the country for the long weekend, but surely ‘weekend retreat decorating‘ is the next best thing … at the very least it’ll give him a MASSIVE hint!

According to those country-style gurus at Country Homes & Interiors, it’s all about going back to basics, with durable denim (I’m just thinking of Heath Ledger’s jacket in Brokeback Mountain) that can take scuffs and knocks, and patchwork quilts and throws to soften the look. Then of course there’s the rustic wood furniture and vintage accessories.

The classic country combo of blue and white is perfect for a bedroom update – combine ticking stripe bedlinen, cotton quilts and delicte lace tablecloths.

Loose sofa covers in hardwearing denim and layer up with patchwork cushions and quilts. Love the Union Jack chest … in case you suddenly feel like you’re in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming.

A high breakfast table with bar stools makes a casual place to eat. Cover stools in pretty mix-and-match fabrics.

… and here’s the must-have patchwork! Psssssssst, I’m making my own one of these over Easter weekend – check out housetohome’s guide to making a patchwork seat cover. It looks really easy … even for a giant Easter egg (nb. that’ll be me by 5pm Sunday).

Lunchtime lust: flower power ceiling

February 25, 2010

Ok, I admit this wallpapered ceiling might be a bit much on a day-to-day basis (especially afters girls’ night), but as a fan of colour, and a fan of feminine boudoir-chic decorating, I’m really drawn to this ambitious floral wallpaper, as seen on gdlaneinteriors blog … they do say, ‘aim high’, after all?

Personally, I wouldn’t go for it in the dining room – it might be a bit much for some dinner guests – but I think this wallpaper would look great in a girly bathroom or bedroom – just as long as it doesn’t spread to the floor!

Wallpaper goes groovy baby

July 16, 2009

Wow! I feel like I’m suddenly in the swinging sixties. Using a brightly patterned and shimmery wallpaper on all four walls is quite a brave move, but I’m glad they’ve teamed it with white furniture or the look could have been a bit too manic – well, for me anyway.
