Father Christmas has style too!

December 24, 2010

Sure he wears the same outfit every year; his belt doesn’t do his belly any favours; and some might say his beard needs a trim … but that doesn’t mean he won’t appreciate a touch of stylish festive charm. He has just stuffed himself down a chimney for goodness sake.

Leave him an extra special treat this Christmas. I love this idea from Livingetc – it’s so easy that you could even do it amid all that last-minute wrapping panic!

Plus, if you’ve got time to spare on Christmas Eve, Martha Stewart has some ideas that are sure to get you to the top of Santa’s list, including fab holiday cookies for him to enjoy.

Let’s hope the renegade Christmas elf doesn’t get to them first ……

Christmas trees – the good, the bad, the UGLY!

December 7, 2010

Anyone walking past my desk this afternoon would have thought I was having a webchat with a clown and a murderer at the same time! You see, I’ve been searching the web for Christmas tree decorating ideas, and while some of them filled me with festive joy, other so-called ‘best designs’ were enough to make a grown woman/decorating addict weep!

The good Christmas tree

Although I’d like a fuller tree (this one looks like it’s going to get frost-bite!), I adore the cute vintage decorations and homespun style. You can pick up everything for this look at John Lewis.

The bad Christmas tree

Although I’m a fan of all things ‘weird and wonderful’ I’m just not convinced by this alternative Christmas tree. I’m with Casa Sugar on this one, it’s just not … well … Christmassy?

The ugly Christmas tree

Oh my! This is what happens when bad Christmas decorations happen to good trees. I’m sure it works for some people, but do those people have a Lion, a Witch and also a Wardrobe??

How to get this Christmas hallway look

December 1, 2010

I love this simple yet stylish Christmas hallway look.

1) Place a cute mini wreath over the mirror for an instant festive update.

2) Fill a cake stand piled with small parcels – you’ll get extra brownie points from your guests.

3) Keep Christmas gifts at the ready in rustic wicker storage baskets.

4) Cover up the (I don’t want to say ugly) base of the Christmas tree covered in simple brown paper

Your dreaming of a white WHAT?

December 21, 2009

I must say, I didn’t get too excited when I came across this ‘make it a white winter’ feature on housetohome this morning.

Mind you, that was probably because a ‘white winter’ for me had meant waiting for a rail replacement bus for over an hour at 8am while silenty urging my toes to stay attached!

However, when I finally got the feeling back I had a proper look. It’s so easy to opt for darker colours to create a warm and cosy space, but this snuggley living room space does just fine with neutrals of different tones and textures!

Check out these tips for cosying up this winter – who knows, it might just get you through the next time you’re standing on the cold train platform, contemplating hugging a random stranger, just for the body warmth!

FESTIVE FIX! Reinvent old Christmas decorations

December 16, 2009

Got some Christmas decorations going spare? Check out these ideas from Livingetc.com to give your home a quick and easy Christmas feel.

Christmas time or not, this bedroom is just gorgeous (that beautiful bed is from Niki Jones!) It just goes to show that a string of simple fairy lights hung round a window and a  star decoration will add bags of festive charm. It’s the perfect way to spruce up a guest bedroom.

Here are those simple yet stylish fairy lights again! If you, like me, have decided to go down a different route this year, put last year’s ‘champs’ to good use by hanging them from your Christmas living room lampshade.

Make a Christmas statement in your hallway by sticking baubles onto the walls with Blu-tack. Whether you go for the same shade or for a range of colours, it’s a sure-fire way of creating an eye-POPPING festive feature.

‘Calmenvy’

noun 1 a sudden longing for relaxing thoughts whilst doing some last-minute Christmas shopping. 2 (the calmenvy of) skill in carrying out last-minute Christmas shopping without wanting to lie down in Debenhams and take a nap!

Phew! I’ve made the most of a long weekend to get all everything sorted for Christmas, and besides a slight Christmas party dress buying ‘relief’ (what? It’s uniform?) I managed to get through it unscathed.

However, this morning i’ve been hunting for some tips to help Christmas day run as smoothly as possible (who KNOWS how many party dresses i’ll buy otherwise?) It might not be ‘roomenvy’, but in the interest of ‘calmenvy’ have a look at these tips.

Modern Christmas decorating ideas

December 10, 2009

Personally, I don’t know that many people with a super-modern home, so I was delighted to be asked to step inside a sleek modern house that’s dressed for Christmas.

… Ok, so they didn’t ‘ask’ per se, but i’m sure they won’t mind me stealing a bit of inspiration – i’ll bring it back?

Christmas hallways – my favourite 5

December 3, 2009

If you’re inviting your friends and family over for the Christmas period you’ll want to make as festive an entrance as possible!

With the Christmas dining room planned – and with only a lowly advent calendar propped on my console table to symbolise the festivities – i’m turning my head to Christmas hallway ideas for inspiration.

I’m in lust with this chandelier from Roast Designs – it looks like a bunch of oversized baubles! p.s Credit to the family for wrapping all the presents in the same way!

Add festive charm to your hallway console table with a mini Christmas tree and wreath. Line a cakestand with mini Christmas boxes filled with sweets, to hand out to your guests.

This is a really classic Christmas decorating scheme. Line leafy garlands of eucalyptus along the rail and add emphasis to a chandelier with oversized baubles.

Going for a more subtle festive look? Take inspiration from the founder of Maison‘s stylish home and add sparkle to your hallway table with shimmering Christmas accessories.

My personal favourite. A cute festive hallway filled with a leafy garland mixed with red ribbons and decorations, and hooks to hang up all those ‘mind-of-their-own’ Christmas cards!

Toy storage solutions!

December 2, 2009

The only thing that could possibly tarnish my Christmas day morning, is stepping on Barbie or a Transformer in my socks – OUCH!

Livingetc.com has decided to bring order to toyland with 7 décor-friendly storage solutions for children’s rooms.

Here’s one of my favourite ideas.

1) It makes great use of redundant space – no nook and cranny should go to waste when kids’ room storage is involved!

2) It allows their favourite toys to be kept on display, while other bits and bobs can be tucked away in those handy drawers.

3) It’s the perfect cosy reading spot (… or place to tear open those presents from Father Christmas!)

So you think your bedroom’s chilly?

December 1, 2009

I was invited to the Absolut Ice Bar in Piccadilly Circus last night, to check out the new ice-cool speaker system (see what I did there?) from Harman Kardon. If you’re looking to get in your hubby’s good books, these would make a fantastic Christmas gift!

Whilst I did start to panic when I couldn’t feel my toes in the bar, it did get me thinking how cool it would be to spend a night in an ice hotel.

Check out these brrrrrrilliant bedrooms!
