Can I come in? John Mayer’s New York pad

October 11, 2010

I imagine I feel about as inspired by John Mayer‘s home as Jennifer Aniston feels about his relationship skills. I was expecting it to have a little bit more personality and warmth, but instead it seems he’s paid the Armani Casa design team to create a grown up pad which although contains absolutely STUNNING furniture pieces and furnishings, doesn’t really say much about the musician, himself.

Am I being too harsh?

Check out Apartment Therapy for more pictures of his home, as featured in Elle Decor.

This is my favourite room in the home… mainly because of the funky picture gallery, and, let’s face it, the guitars!!

Friday’s Fetish: Quirky country style

October 8, 2010

Back to ye olde Englishe roots (although it is always fun to dream about a celebrity lifestyle in Miami) I’ve found some pretty country decorating ideas from Ideal Home. They’re really getting me in the mood for a sunny weekend  – that’s right a sunny weekend??

Country style doesn’t have to be all about chintzes and pastels. Keep the look traditional with a brown leather sofa, wood-burning stove and a mix of ticking stripes and checks. I love the unexpected quirky details in this living room – that bird wallpaper is fantastic!

And if you’re going for elegant country cottage style, start with simple, hard-wearing basics like natural-fibre flooring, a large, sturdy dining table and  chairs wih removeable covers. Hang tonal wallpaper for soft, barely there colour, then add a few vintage-style accessories.

Friday’s Fetish: New England Style

October 1, 2010

Oh I love New England decorating style. I don’t know if I want to admit how many magazines I trudged through to find an image to show you why, but it does start with ‘hun’ and ends with ‘dreds’

Here’s exactly the type of cosy New England style that’s cool and calm in summer and cosy and welcoming in winter…

Mix modern buys with vintage pieces to create a living room that looks as though it has evolved over time.

Simple waxed or painted wood furniture against a backdrop of whitewashed or neutral walls sets the scene for the easy-going New England style look. Choose natural fibre rugs and runners, and use wicker baskets for storage.

Bring a relaxed look to your dining room with distressed furniture and an open dresser. Country linens add to the New England feel.

Acceptable in the 80s

September 28, 2010

Check out the latest modern decorating trend – hits of the 80s. According to the modern style gurus at Livingetc, ‘the decade that gave us mobile phones, mineral water and Madonna is being reinvented.’ Now that’s what I call power dressing!

Layers of grey and light-diffusing blinds make for a moody, sensual room. And after two decades of neutral schemes, pops of vibrant colour are back.

Eighties design loved huge in a big way, but today’s loft living requires a slouchy sofa – in blue velvet, of course.

Hip to be square. ‘Look at me’ demanded the most iconic furniture from the Eighties, and those confident shapes are back. This time, though, the angles are bolder and shots of graphic colour add modern edge.

Industrial materials were all over Eighties furniture, but 21st century utility plays with scale, like an unexpected mix of castors on this table.

Friday’s Fetish: Autumn impressions

September 24, 2010

If you’ve stepped on a crunchy leaf, it means it’s Autumn! No longer am I longing for hot sunny weekends, I’m now embracing the snuggley, cosiness of the Autumn months when the sun’s still shining, but your cheeks and nose are chilly, and where you are surrounded by the beautiful colours of nature… don’t I sound profound!?

This season, the decorating world is ready for rich shades of hedgerow fruit and leafy woodlands will be captured on watercolour fabrics and artisan ceramics. Just add warming wools and painted furniture for a free-spirited bohemian look.

See for yourself with these stunning country-style schemes

Use painterly fabrics in the latest shades for curtains. Team with homespun-style accessories for an easy-to-live-with living room.

Ideas for decorating a living room

September 23, 2010

In the name of hard work, I’ve been flicking through my favourite decorating magazines to check I haven’t missed any beautiful decorating schemes while I was on holiday, and thank GOODNESS I did!

This glamorous living room is sooooo snazzy, very ‘private members club meets chic hotel lobby’ darling! It would be the perfect entertaining zone for Christmas (“it’s coming and not a soul on earth can stop it” Armageddon, 1998).

Here’s how to get the look:

1) Paint the wall behind your TV black for the darkened-cinema effect. Plus, when the screen’s turned off, it will blend into the background.

2) Add punchy colours, such as hot sexy pink, zesty lime and amethyst.

3) Mix styles by teaming traditional scrolled armchairs with modern side tables or a simple drum lampshade with a decorative base.

4) Go for flexible living room furniture that can be used as seats or footstools, allowing your home to switch seamlessly from home cinema to entertaining space and back again.

5) Get the lighting right – fit a dimmer switch and place table and floor lamps in corners, so you can adjust the mood easily.
