2010 Room Awards – woo!

January 11, 2011

2010 was a great year for home decorating and DIY. Like you, we loved the return of classic retro prints, high-tech printed wallpaper and new ways to be eco friendly and chic.

To kick-start the 2010 Room Awards we’re starting with the Best Kitchen of 2010, which is this brilliant family kitchen.

Best kitchen of 2010 | Kitchen awards for 2010 | Family kitchen-diner | Room Envy

The perfect kitchen-diner; it's a kitchen and a diner!

Why it wins? Aside from the big chalkboard – great for shopping lists and a drawing space for kids – small kitchen-diners that give the allusion of space can be tricky.

Often kitchen-diners can look like the furniture of a giant has been squeezed into the kitchen of someone from Lilliput; and the overall look can be cluttered and uncomfortable – you can’t image making a cup of tea, let alone a family meal. Or a poorly designed kitchen-diner can give the impression that the designer has rifled though the space-saving section of Lakeland and bought all the stock.

But look at the beauty of this kitchen-diner: the pastel colours – a nod to cute retro styling, and clean, functional furniture. You just know that when the kids’ have gone to bed the adults crack open a few bottles of vino, light some candles and have a delicious meal, and perhaps a adult game of Catchphrase on the chalkboard. Can we come to dinner please?

Do you love this? Tell us what was your fave kitchen of 2010?

I have a crush on this beautiful kitchen!

September 7, 2010

There, I said it! I’m not about to start calculating our love compatability, putting it’s photo in my pencil case, and popping his name into dreamphone (god I sound past it) BUT I must admit I gave this stunning kitchen a similar double-take to when I saw Dominic West in Leicester Square the other month!

I love it’s casual restaurant vibe, it’s relaxed open-plan finish and it’s mix and match finishes – and how the dining ‘zone’ is defined by trendy bar-style pendant light, sexy tableware and a monochrome rug. So if you’re looking for kitchen colour ideas, it’s all about being brave with pattern!

Oh to be sitting at that table with friends and a large glass of red wine… (not sure I’d get any cooking done?)

‘The Kitchen I Envy’ by Magnet’s Alison Coleman

July 22, 2010

Looking to update your kitchen? See what designs inspire the experts! We asked Magnet’s kitchen guru, Alison Coleman

“Having worked in the kitchen industry for eight years, I can’t help but have a healthy curiosity for other people’s homes and in particular their kitchens. In fact, I can’t go to a friend’s house without taking a sneak peak at their worktop, or stealing a glance a their kitchen units.

Over the years kitchen trends have come and gone. I’ve seen some pretty ghastly things in my time such as corked walls and the era of TV inspired DIY kitchens during the 90s produced some pretty horrific results.

Last year we installed a kitchen in a home that featured a mix of Caldo Walnut and Urban Noir units. It looks stunning – the dark gloss really complement the wood and overall effect looks really exclusive. The black granite worktop is so sleek, I love the way it blends seamlessly in to the hob and the slate look floor really compliments the dark gloss units.

It’s a really great example of how you can customise a kitchen by mixing different styles and units in one space.

What’s your kitchen-diner style?

May 7, 2010

Decisions decisions! That’s the theme for this week, isn’t it? Well here’s another big one for you (admittedly not as ground-breaking as the elections) what is your kitchen-diner style? … well it’s important to us decorating addicts anyway – just don’t bring it up amid a political dinner party debate!

I love these designs from Homes & Gardens – swanky as ever, but chilled-out and relaxed, which is the way a kitchen-diner (and breakfasts in general) should be … in a perfect world.

Modern Victorian-style kitchen-diner – those copper pendant lights are just dreamy!

Soft and comfy kitchen-diner – I love the idea of a corner sofa around the table so everyone can sit and chat together.

Casual bistro kitchen-diner – a modern take on the country-style cafe curtain looks great above the comfy window seat.

Kitchen designs for those with iron stomachs!

April 15, 2010

Thanks Kitchenista for inviting me to chat about my favourite kitchen design. I knew INSTANTLY which one I wanted to choose … I’ve been rabbiting on about ‘my crush’ for some time now, so check it out at http://blog.magnet.co.uk/.

Anyway, most of you know I like a bit of room slating as much as a bit of room rating, and when thinking of my NIGHTMARE kitchen, I had no problem deciding which. I came across it one rainy Monday morning, and I’m only 99% sure that when I clicked into it, a flash of lighting didn’t crash outside my window!

Don’t get me wrong, I do marvel at the kitchen cabinet artwork, but I find it difficult enough hunting for my keys in the morning, let alone routing around strange provincial French alleyways for my cereal bowl!

The icing on the cake is the clinically-white oven amid the 18th Century-style townhouses … a sentence I never thought I’d say.

The ultimate personalised kitchen

April 6, 2010

Oak kitchen doors? White gloss cabinetry, PAH! What if someone (aka Magnet) told you that you could print any image onto your kitchen cabinet doors! I know, I know, your gut instinct would be to demand a giant picture of Brad Pitt I’m sure, but for those of you wanting to be a bit kinder to your husbands, why not go for a picture of your kids, or your favourite food? … the possibilities are endless!

True, it might be a bit modern or a bit too quirky for everyone, but you’ve got to admit they’re a lot of fun.

Now I know there are PLENTY of self-confessed city batchelors dying to use a print of their most dashing headshot in their kitchen … please don’t.

Sexy kitchen diner design

February 25, 2010

Not only do I love looking at the latest kitchen designs from Beautiful Kitchens magazine, but when I’m invited on a little tour around it, I feel like it’s summer, I’ve got a cold drink in hand, and I’m chilling with the host catching up on the all the gossip (oh, daydreaming again!)

I love this white and orange ‘entertainer’s kitchen‘ – the gloss units look like they’re floating on air, and the bar stools add a shot of zesty colour, as well as providing a place for guest to chitter chatter with the chef.

I might not be able to actually hang out here, but the next best thing is quizzing the Editor of Beautiful Kitchens, Ysanne Brooks on everything from where to buy orange bar stools like these, to how can I make the most of my small kitchen layout (when all I want to do is drool over this light and spacious number!) Tune in to housetohome’s kitchen webchat tomorrow (February 26th) lunchtime at 1pm to join me in stealing her expert decorating tips.
