Shaker-style kitchens – shake it up baby!

June 3, 2010

I LOVE shaker kitchens, and believe me, that’s nothing to do with my knowledge of 17th century American history. What’s great is that they’re really timeless and can be tailored to suit your style. So if you thought that to have a shaker kitchen meant you had to have an oast house in Kent with a golden labrador called Bonnie (was I day-dreaming?), think again!

So now for the all-important question – HOW DO YOU SHAKE YOURS?

Freestanding shaker-style kitchen – perfect if you get bored easily and want to rearrange your scheme. (This design by Plain English is perfect for the look.)

Modern shaker-style kitchen – switch round door knobs for sleek metal handles and hey presto! (Visit Second Nature for more modern kitchen designs.)

Wooden shaker-style kitchen – could work in both contemporary or rustic schemes, depending on the wood. (Crabtree has loads more shaker-style looks like this.)

Period shaker-style kitchen – ah the traditional country-style option, maybe invest in that oast house after all. (I just LOVE this design by Smallbone.)

Colourful shaker-style kitchen – colour your kitchen happy by going for units in an accent colour. (Love it, too? Check out John Lewis of Hungerford.)

Can I come in? Samantha Roddick’s sexy home

March 9, 2010

Call me strange, but if someone had asked me to guess how the founder of Coco de Mer decorated her home, I wouldn’t exactly have expected to see a country cottage farm with a bird plate collection! Instead I imagined it just as inticing and mysterious as this Hampstead beauty.

I think for this bedroom, stylish storage solutions are key … that’s all I’m saying!

That shower is amaaaaaaaaaazing, I love how it’s a simple concept but looks so darn stylish.

Samantha can turn any decorating style into a sensual place to relax. She says: “Take me into any era, from the 17th century to the Seventies, and I’ll find something I love. I’m not dedicated to one decade – my life is about variety.” – I’ll say!!

Samantha turned an old wooden chest and display cupboards into a funky storage unit in the kitchen. I love the polaroid photo display and the eye-catching pendant lights.

What a gorgeous attic children’s room. The glossy green floor makes a statement, and the egg chair is ideal for those ‘leave me alone, Mum’ moments.

Design ideas for small kitchens

February 18, 2010

What can I say? All this lusting after beautiful country-style kitchens has left me determined to update my own. Sure I don’t have beams, traditional features and a polka-dot Emma Bridgewater range cooker (not that I’d turn one away, mind) but that doesn’t mean I can’t make the most of my space – however mini it is!

I just have to leave a butter knife out in my kitchen and it appears cluttered, so my first job is updating my storage. If you’re in the same pickle as me, check out these fantastic clutter-busting layout and storage solutions from housetohome.

The mini kitchen triumphs again!

Hot new lemon kitchen from Moben

December 22, 2009

If you are physically able to move on Boxing Day (I know i’ll be weighed down by mincepies, but it’s worth a shot) then head to your nearest Moben for their half-price January sales … or just to have a look at their super-sexy brand new modern kitchen design for 2010. (I’ve sneaked a copy of the images to give you an idea!)

The Geneva kitchen‘s zingy lemon is great for adding a splash of sunshine to those gruelling mornings, combine it with either their city-chic anthracite, or their chalk finishes for a kitchen to make even the most swanky of pad’s mouths water!!

What’s more, it fits perfectly with one of the top kitchen trends for 2010 – high impact colour. I’ve been busy quizzing the experts for kitchen, bathroom and colour trends for the new decade – but don’t worry, I got it alllllll on camera!

I’ll let you know when it’s up!

I admit, it’s a bit modern for my taste, (a country-style fanatic), but I think it’s super sleek and has oodles of designer style (minus the price tag!)

Magnet’s Rio kitchen: from high street to home!

July 29, 2009

I remember first seeing Magnet‘s Rio kitchen and wondering how many people would go for such a sugary stripey look. It was designed to be an accent range – perfect for adding splashes of colour – so imagine my surprise when I saw that someone had missed the memo (intentionally or not) and covered their ENTIRE kitchen in the range – and teamed with matching lime walls and matching pink appliances! Yowch!! I just can’t figure out whether the designers at Magnet would be delighted or rolling in their … paint trays! Thoughts welcome.

Check out this cool kitchen!

July 27, 2009

Ok, I know it’s rude to stair (sorry), but I couldn’t help but double-take this fantastic kitchen from TrendsNow. I just love how they’ve incorporated the stairs into the basement kitchen area paying extra attention to the colour scheme. You’d have to remember not to leave plates/piping hot pans out, mind.

Recognise this kitchen?

July 22, 2009

Yes I know, I ought to be working, but the ‘What TV Series did these kitchens star in?’ quiz on casasugar was just too distracting this morning. Here’s a kitchen from one of my all-time favourite shows, i’ll give you a clue – it’s as fashionable and stylish as the gorgeous kitchen units … but a lot more cheeky.

Not so mellow yellow

March 23, 2009

I can only count five yellow pieces in this dark grey kitchen, but it just goes to show how all you need is a bright accent here, and a bright accent there, and you’ve given your room an instant – not to mention cost-friendly – facelift.
