Summer of Love: luscious living rooms

September 15, 2010

The kitchen may be the heart of the home, but the living room is where you can WHOLEHEARTEDLY indulge your love of cushions! Here are three of my favourite cosy cushioned designs…

1) It’s all about symmetry in this fresh, feminine living room. I love the alcove shelving painted in different shades of pink, and the sharp white accessories give a bright, spacious feel.

2) And now for something completely different… This striking room certainly embraces colour with its dark grey walls offset by neon furniture and accessories. The hot pink coffee table looks fab against the grey painted floorboards and the quirky artwork completes the look.

3) And finally – it may be autumn (groan!) but it must feel like spring all year round in this soothing, white-themed living room. Touches of soft yellow stop it becoming TOO minimalist and I love the different textures used on the curtains, blinds and rug. I’m not sure how long it would stay that pristine once red wine was allowed to enter the equation though…

Can I come in? Sienna Miller’s London home

June 18, 2010

Who knew Sienna Miller had a Turkish bath??! If i had one I’d be shouting it from the rooftops! Check out the elaborate tiles and cosy chill-out areas. There’s enough room to bathe an entire army, never mind the tiny Sienna…

The rest of her pad – located in the swanky St John’s Wood area of North London – has a chilled out, bohemian vibe to it. A bookshelf is used to display a fascinating array of hats, while an impressive staircase takes centre stage .

‘The room I envy’ by Hannah Sandling

June 17, 2010

After Hannah Sandling answered all our eco questions during Housetohome’s webchat last week, I was desperate to quiz her about her favourite room.
“I love this room for two reasons:  firstly, lighting is a very powerful tool.  It  can either make a room look delightfully inviting and warm or it can highlight all the ugly features! Having all types of different lighting, ranging from candles to a selection of lamps, will ensure that you have the right ambience for every occasion.

Colour is very powerful, too.  It has the ability to make a room look sad, happy, light, dark, small or big.  I love this soft, earthly palette of colours – it makes the room look bright and spacious and creates a tranquil haven. After a hard day’s work, I want to come home to a scheme that nourishes my mind, not clutters it.”

Hotel-style decorating – the celebrity way

January 13, 2010

If I had bags of money, an assistant to organise the DIY for me, and the constant chore of staying away from home – how would I decorate?

Casasugar always has the celebrity answer!

Guess which well-known stars own these luxurious hotels.

Is an attic living area enough to give you Vertigo? I’m sure the lead singer of this band will let you know. (Bet you they’ve jumped on those sofas!!)

I’m not surprised this actor has decorated his hotel living room in true ranch style – I’ve seen The Horse Whisperer, after all!

Lunchtime lust: flower fairy lights.

January 12, 2010

If it wasn’t cruel enough that my Christmas tree had to go (leaving a garish and gaping space in my living room!), now January wants my Christmas lights as well! Meany.

Personally, I can’t accept the lack of magic that’s now fallen over my home, so I’m hunting for some timeless fairy lights to use all year round. Take THAT, spring!

I especially love  flower lights, they add a gorgeously girly decorative touch whether they’re switched on or not. I’ve found some beautiful ones at Blaze On, Melody Maison, Flower Glow and Graham and Greene.

And it couldn’t be easier to use them to decorate your home …

Can I come in? Rustic Chicago loft apartment

January 11, 2010

I fell in love with three things this weekend, The Time Traveller’s Wife, Eric Bana (just, gorgeous), and The Time Traveller’s Wife set. With the help of Casasugar, I’ve been inspired by roomy and electic loft-style decorating. Oh to have one of those gorgeous rustic American apartments I see in so many films these days (always owned by a beautiful twenty-something girl who doesn’t seem to have any money?? There’s still hope!)

Anyway, check out Casasugar’s guide to decorating in the style of The Time Traveller’s Wife for great style tips.

In the meantime, I’ve been hunting for my favourite loft apartment on Apartment Therapy. I love the arty look of this Chicago home. A converted factory, it mixes industrial chic with classic historic touches to create a homely space with an edgy vibe.

Friday’s Fetish: English eccentric decorating

January 8, 2010

Who says smart decorating can’t look ‘lived-in’? I love the casual mix-and-match approach to this English Eccentric decorating idea by Ideal Home. A touch of traditional style here, some quirky finishing touches there. Perfect.

Here’s how to get this hot look:

1) Start with a timeless wallpaper with subtle shimmer – a damask design will add a hint of grandeur … daaaarling.

2) Add shapely upholstered furniture – a buttoned back piece never hurt anyone – and team with modern wooden designs.

3) Mix in quirky accessories, eye-catching cushions, and vintage treasures to add a fun twist to the scheme.

This classic-style living room has more staying power than the average child at Disney Land.

I love the mix of Fifties-inspired floral wallpaper with a hot fuchsia sideboard in this modern bedroom.

2009 decorating awards! The winners are in.

January 4, 2010

Ok, so I know that the new year is all about moving on – from mince pies, Christmas parties, maybe even a disastrous relationship – but before I get stuck into my new year’s resolutions (less mince pies!) I’ve been having a look at who topped the Housetohome readers’ decorating scheme lust list.

Here’s some are the winners of our best rooms schemes for 2009.

Best bathroom 2009 – I, too, might be wooed by the massive tub and his ‘n’ hers basins!

roomenvy - subtle grey tones bathroom

Best bedroom 2009 – it seems everyone loved attic bedrooms last year, or maybe it was the French-style bed that gave this bedroom a hint of … je ne sais quoi.

Best living room 2009 – snuggley fireplace with a cosy sheepskin rug, yes please!

Best kitchen 2009 – simple Shaker-style with a modern twist. It’s a great space for entertaining while cooking, although a bit contemporary for my taste.

Best dining room 2009 – I must admit, I was surprised that this topped the dining room list. Maybe it’s the quirky chandelier? That said, it’s better than this dining room … shudder.

roomenvy - elegant formal dining room

Best children’s room 2009 – cheerful and colourful, although I think this might be the decorating equivalent of giving a child one too many E numbers!!

5 living room colour ideas

November 11, 2009

There’s nothing like a vibrant splash of colour to brighten up your living room amid the “do I really have to go to work?” miserable weather. Colour is a great way to liven up your look without forking out on an entire new decorating scheme. I’ve been checking out housetohome for my favourite living room colour ideas.

Try a duo-tone colour scheme. This living room teams a rich jade feature wall with a bright and cheerful coral sofa for a striking look.

Liven up your alcoves. This living room is tickled pink with bright and sassy floral wallpaper, vibrant striped curtains and accessories to match.

Add definition with white. A dark midnight paint shade on the walls allows stylish modern furniture to stand out.

roomenvy - statement eclectic whites

Colour doesn’t have to dominate. Why not add accents of bright colours with accessories and wall stencils – that way, the look can easily be updated if you change your mind.

Pick a colourful statement sofa. If you team it in a monochrome living room it will stand out and stand proud!
