Blissful bathing

August 1, 2012

What do I like about this bathroom? Firstly, the wallpaper. Not hugely practical maybe, but there’s nothing to say it can’t be used as long as you have a good extractor and don’t get it wet.

Secondly, the glossy black tiles on the bath panel – they appear almost a combination of brick and large mock-croc.

Thirdly the elegant two-drawer unit that would normally be more at home in a bedroom, yet works wonderfully with a glass candelabra placed on top for that extra bit of luxury.

Who says bathrooms have to be boring?

So black and white

July 4, 2012

Bathrooms are often seen as a functional space rather than a room to really be creative with – which is why I like this scheme so much. It may be black and white, but the tree-print wallpaper and elegant French-inspired furniture gives it that little something extra. Add to it the black tiles on the bath panel, a glass candelabra and some luxurious towels, and you’ve got yourself a bathroom to be proud of.

Très chic kitchen

July 13, 2011

Oh, I want it! So pretty, so quaint – a little slice of Paris in your own home. When I look at this room, I’m transported to a 1930s street cafe with Poirot sitting in the corner twiddling his moustache and solving mysteries (ok, maybe not…)

Normally, I find monochrome too dull, too boring, but this simple kitchen-diner proves me wrong. For me, the cute check curtains and leaded windows lift this room from ordinary to extraordinary, without being over the top. And, just in case I can’t quite shake free of my fixation with colour, a quick lick of paint on the window frames, picture rail, maybe the chairs, and some new cushions (I’m thinking a deep wine red…) and hey presto – you’ve got yourself a whole new room. Emily

Into the woods

February 10, 2011

Bathrooms are always a bit of a tricky one, aren’t they? I’m not overly keen on uber-traditional bathrooms but am not really a fan of super-minimalist suites either (I mean, if I can’t clutter it up with millions of different lotions and potions, what’s the point?)

This folk-inspired wallpaper has got me weak at the knees

Which is why I adore this quirky, almost fairy-tale-like bathroom that I found whilst pottering around on Ideal Home earlier. I adore the folksy, hand-drawn quality of the paper, which has been varnished and covered with glass to make sure it doesn’t get water-damaged. Using wallpaper in the bathroom is a big upcoming trend and I love this forest illustration paper – paired with the croc-print bath and rococo cabinet it’s pretty much perfect. I’d like to see a few brighter accessories to stop the room looking quite so cold though.

What do you think? Is this fairy-tale-esque forest wallpaper hot or not?

Monochrome Mondays! Stripe not strike!

October 4, 2010

Why can’t answers to Monday’s questions be a little bit more black and white?? Q: How can I possibly get to work following the tube strike? A: By some sort of giant bird? Q: Do have the stomach for my Monday gym class as much as I had a stomach for a food-filled Saturday? A: Depends if there was a prize involved. Ultimately, the answers are baffling!

What will cheer me out from beneath a cup of coffee, though? Easy – whisk me away in beautiful monochrome decorating schemes, please!

Use wall space above your media unit to display photos – stick to black and white pics and frames for a coherent look.

Country-style decorating trend – monochrome

September 23, 2010

I love the monochrome look, but as country-style decorating girl, it can be difficult find a black-and-white decorating scheme that would suit the rest of my home – it’s sits pretty as a contemporary type of look.

However, Country Homes & Interiors has made me eat my ‘modern monochrome’ words! Black and white is getting a country twist this season on toiles and hand-blocked patterns. Yippeeeee! Be inspired by these beautiful schemes on how to get this classic colour palette in your home.

Mix small and large-scale designs with an upholstered headboard against a statement wallpaper…

Bedroom designs for those on a budget

September 23, 2010

(… and those who weren’t naughty enough to decide to have THREE summer holidays!) I always go straight to the ‘cash clever decorator’ section of Ideal Home magazine (although I make sure I do it subtly on the tube when surrounded by important-looking people in designer suits). They always have beautiful decorating ideas that won’t hurt your purse’s feelings.

Take this vintage bedroom ideas, all for less than £130!

It’s all about blowsy rose-prints in bold black and white. This is perfect if you want a girly scheme but your husband has vetoed any pink!

Decide where the main focus of the pattern should be – they’ve opted for the bedlinen, but you could go for a feature wall or curtains – and go for a twist with the pattern, the rug here is dominantly black with white flowers while the bedlinen is the opposite. Keep the rest of the scheme light with black accents like the flower wall art.

Lunchtime Lust: black and white bedrooms

May 11, 2010

Everyone’s chatting about black and white bedrooms this week, and although I am trying to egg summer on with chat of vintage florals and beach-hut inspired decorating, I’m afraid I’m going to have to hop on the bandwagon! These bedroom decorating ideas are simply dreamy!

And you don’t have to go all-out with all-black walls and white accents (quite the intimidating look!), instead, add definition with black wallpaper or monochrome bedlinen.

Be inspired by these stunning designs.

Create a feature wall with a stunning and shimmering black bedroom wallpaper, keep the rest of the walls white, but continue the look with a show-stopping chandelier and black and white bedlinen.

Add definition to an all-white bedroom decorating scheme with black furniture – you can even add a splash of zingy colour like they’ve done here … but don’t ask me to explain the recorder?

Black and white bedrooms aren’t just for modern minimalist lovers (… or self-confessed batchelors!) This monochrome scheme uses black and white bedlinen, a black headboard, and matching vintage trunks to get the look.

Create a black and white bedroom you’ll both love with formal bedlinen, and an eye-catching piece of wall art above the bed. Matching bedside tables and lamps give this contemporary bedroom a formal feel.

Monochrome bathroom

May 14, 2009

You can never go wrong with a black and white decorating scheme.  I love this bathroom – apparently they varnished the wallpaper and covered the bottom half in clear perspex to waterproof it.

Bold black and white

January 12, 2009

Monochrome is a style statement that just never seems to go out of fashion.  This bedroom looks really stylish, I think the luggage cases at the bottom of the bed are a great idea.
