Feeling Crafty

April 14, 2011

With tomorrow’s DIY Web Chat growing ever closer, we’ve got home improvement projects on the brain! I myself am looking at getting into a little wall decorating. Doesn’t this feature strip of wallpaper just completely lift this whole room? It really seems to tie the whole scheme together, and I must say the icing on the cake is the two cuttings framed beautifully either side. Genius! Don’t you just love it when you see something gorgeous like this, and realise ‘Hey! I could do that!’. And without breaking the bank, either.

Yellow and Grey Living Room with Wallpaper

Yellow and Grey, a match made in heaven?

I am seriously tempted to spend my Easter long weekend wallpapering. I have had a few scary visions, however, of myself covered head to toe in paste and paper. Probably best to check myself into that DIY web chat over lunch tomorrow, where I shall pick the brains of none other than Tommy Walsh! Surely he will have a few tips on hassle-free wallpapering…

Friday’s Fetish: designer hotel rooms

November 19, 2010

It’s Friday, it’s cold outside, so obviously I’m daydreaming about holidays to foreign lands. I’ve fixed my sights on the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, because (thanks to Design Milk) I’ve just found a place to stay that’s far from the sterile space of a British budget hotel.

LLOVE. No, not a typo, but the name of this amazing exhibition/hotel that you can actually stay in! I’ve always wanted to be a performance artist – ok, not strictly true, but this creative collaboration between Japanese and Dutch designers would be the perfect place to launch my career/ sleep in incredible one-of-a-kind surroundings. And unique is definitely the word… just look at these bedrooms!

Staying in a space with this maxed-out striped effect on the customised wallpaper, floors, and everything in between would be like sleeping inside the lining of a giant Paul Smith suit (I would imagine).

Bix box, little box… this bedroom is an exact replica of a dilapidated traditional Japanese-style room, only with really comfy looking beds. Take note of the paper screens that form the walls – a great style idea to steal.

If you love the great outdoors, perhaps this is one for you? Love the coat hangers on the tree branches and the buried bath tub. It’s all a little Midsummer Night’s Dream, the updated version.

And from one fairytale to another… what’s not to love about this GIANT sculptural bed? Goldilocks has no problems with me saying, this bedroom is juuuusssst right. Ok, where do I book?

Chinese whispers: Oriental decorating trends

November 18, 2010

This may be an unofficial trend, but I’ve noticed a lot of Chinoiserie and Japonica on the home decorating front recently. Far more elegant than my usual Oriental tastes (such as late-night Chinese takeaways, and laughing at Japanese B-movies) this style always looks, well, beautiful. It’s certainly got timeless appeal (unlike my aforementioned far-eastern passtimes).

Jade green soft furnishings, black lacquered Chinese cabinets, a minimalistic four-poster and lashings of white – this bedroom look is crisp, clean and modern.

Inspired by nature, this opulent dressing room with its hand-painted wallpaper makes me want to get all dressed up and head to the opera… to see Madame Butterfly! Dark wood, a gilt-edged mirror and that amazing shade of jade. Homes & Gardens has literally turned me green with envy.

Even when it’s pared-down, the embroidered cherry blossom motif on this Pied a Terre bed linen from House of Fraser endows this bedroom with pure sophistication. Shuttered windows, vibrant silk cushions, fan detailing… I’m all a-flutter!

Lunchtime lust: Scandi chic

November 16, 2010

Cool in summer, cooler still in winter, Scandi chic (and it’s closest pal, ski-chalet style) appeal to our classic home instints. Sometimes embracing the less-is-more mantra, with simplistic pared-back design and at others going all-out on striking pattern from wallpapers to soft furnishings, you can never accuse the Scandinavians of being boring. Quirky, yes (see the crazy winter advertising campaigns from Ikea) but dull, never.

Lusting this lunchtime comes courtesy of Ideal Home, and starts with a POW-factor moment…

You say pattern, I say wow! Pattern! Wow! Enough of that… A bold blue-based floral wallpaper adds depth to this space, while the lively mix-n-match printed cushions lift the inky-blue mood.

Bleached wooden floorboards, metal Tolix chairs updated with graphic-print seat pads, ice-white gloss kitchen… one wintry wonderland. I think I have created a kitchen shopping list, in a picture.

Looking for fun and functional hallway decorating ideas? A sky-blue cabinet by the front door hides shoes, while a full-length modern floral curtain keeps draughts at bay.

Clean up a bathroom with water-inspired painted surfaces, plain-white tiling and a countertop ceramic sink. Enamel details and a painted wooden stool (for child-friendly sink access) are the perfect finishing touches.

Step inside Sophie Conran’s swanky home!

September 2, 2010

Do you remember Linda Barker raving about designer Sophie Conran‘s sexy pink kitchen on our The Room I Envy series? I loved it then and I love it now – especially seeing it surrounded by the other beautiful rooms in her … MANSION!

Oh the high life!

Bird wallpaper – the good, the bad and the ugly

July 29, 2010

It’s official, I’m completely torn by bird wallpapers. In some ways I find them adorable and the perfect finishing touch to a country-style scheme – especially a pretty little guest bedroom. However, in other ways I find them … well … quite frightening actually. The antique bird or retro bird ‘look’ just isn’t for me.

Here’s how far by bird wallpaper love goes…

The good – cute, country and destined for a guest bedroom, this simple bird wallpaper adds a welcoming touch.

The bad – hmmmmmm, a retro bird feature wall isn’t for me, but I’d certainly give this Seventies-inspired print marks for an eye-catching focal point.

The ugly – this is decorating hell for me. Too many birds, too many antiques, I would feel like I was on a period drama set, not my actual living room!

Cosy living room decorating ideas!

July 26, 2010

I know it’s “summer” and all, but that didn’t stop the “warm summer nights” turning my feet into ice blocks – it’s worse when you least expect it! Anyway, last week I was chatting to Country Homes and Interiors editor, Rhoda Parry, about creating a cosy living room and it couldn’t have come at a better time …. between my frost-bitten feet and my decision to wear a short-sleeved top to work!

Enjoy!

Fab wallpapers! – the utterly fab kind!

June 29, 2010

I LOVE the new wallpapers from Tesco’s new range. We headed to their autumn/winter press show and were utterly WOWed by their high-impact, low-cost designs, the perfect ‘too much money spent of Pimm’s’ summer decorating remedy!

Tired (literally) of baking hot sleepness nights, I’m looking to give my bedroom a cooler, summer twist, and these wallpapers are perfect for the job … and will look just as at home when I’m shivering over winter.

Here’s a sneak peak at the new range (is it wrong that I actually like the mix of samples feature wall??)

June 3, 2010

Ooooooh fancy! Check out these living room decorating ideas for every style. I’ve split them up between modern and classic and formal (no feet on the sofas please) and relaxed (get me my darn book, immediately!) Fine, I admit, I’d be a tad nervous about even drinking a cup of tea in one these schemes, but BOY are they easy on the eye.

Formal classic living room idea – gentle curves, eye-popping pinks and elegant florals…
