Wall of fame

December 12, 2011

Wallpaper has never been so popular. From stripes and metallics to bold damasks and florals, there’s been a real surge in sales and, it seems, creativeness, as more and more innovative designs hit the shops. If you’re not a wallpaper fan and don’t like the idea of one feature wall, let alone covering all four, why not try using wallpaper in a different way? You could, for example, display paper within a frame, or cover a canvas or three to hang on the walls? Or, why not paper above a picture rail, or the back of a bookshelf? The options are endless.

Here are three unique looks, all of which appeal to me for different reasons…

You only need a small panel of this Marilyn paper (£19.95 a roll, Galerie Wallcoverings) to make a statement and add a hit of pure Hollywood glamour. I love the black-and-white print, and teamed with grey walls and bright yellow accessories, it certainly stands out.

This wallpaper (the Camilla collection, from £20.95 a roll, Grandeco Wallcoverings) has a dramatic red floral print that adds colour and depth to a large expanse of wall and works beautifully in this traditional setting. What better way to make a high-ceilinged room feel more cosy?

This Scandi-style room uses textured-look wallpaper  (Livingstones Collection, from £25.95 a roll, Grandeco Wallcoverings) that instead of catching the eye, works well to blend in with the neutral colour scheme.

Which of the three looks would you go for?  Let us know…

Hang it!

September 2, 2011

Does anybody out there have problems choosing wallpaper? Once you’ve got over the ‘shall I paint or paper it?’ dilemma, you’ve then got a minefield of choices to find that perfect look. I like a good wallpaper – a trendy paint colour’s all very well but it doesn’t expressive your individuality to the same extent. It can also reinforce that modern or traditional look you’re after. Here’s a sneak preview of the Johnson house in December’s 25BH  issue to illustrate how tastefully (and cleverly) it can be used. Bit flowery for me though…

Bird wallpaper – the good, the bad and the ugly

July 29, 2010

It’s official, I’m completely torn by bird wallpapers. In some ways I find them adorable and the perfect finishing touch to a country-style scheme – especially a pretty little guest bedroom. However, in other ways I find them … well … quite frightening actually. The antique bird or retro bird ‘look’ just isn’t for me.

Here’s how far by bird wallpaper love goes…

The good – cute, country and destined for a guest bedroom, this simple bird wallpaper adds a welcoming touch.

The bad – hmmmmmm, a retro bird feature wall isn’t for me, but I’d certainly give this Seventies-inspired print marks for an eye-catching focal point.

The ugly – this is decorating hell for me. Too many birds, too many antiques, I would feel like I was on a period drama set, not my actual living room!

Tired (literally) of baking hot sleepness nights, I’m looking to give my bedroom a cooler, summer twist, and these wallpapers are perfect for the job … and will look just as at home when I’m shivering over winter.

Here’s a sneak peak at the new range (is it wrong that I actually like the mix of samples feature wall??)

Foam stamps are back in fashion, so it’s time to get printing! Use simple designs from Papermaze to make panels … but practise first, there’s nothing more embarrassing than someone commenting on your child’s painting skills.

Go on the hunt for some of the latest wall stickers. I love these shoe stickers from the Crown Paints range at The Stencil Library, but DON’T let your husband tell you that this means you don’t need the real thing.
