Lunchtime Lust: Sexy and swanky stripes

November 24, 2010

I’m finding myself teetering on the edge of a very steep Christmas cliff at the moment, a mere breath away from plummeting into a world of Christmas decorations, ideas, gift ideas and festive Crafts… so why I’ve still got my balance, I thought I’d continue with some general (albeit it absolutely stunning decorating schemes).

I love these luxurious decorating schemes from Homes & Gardens, they show just how stripes offer the perfect way to make a stylish statement.

An elegant wallpaper with wide horizontal stripes will give a living room the illusion of width.

Use plain linen for both walls, curtains and pelmet, then embellish with wide bands of different coloured velvet ribbon.

Bedroom wallpaper ideas

September 6, 2010

Want to know how to create the ultimate hotel-style bedroom? Why not find inspiration in a … boutique hotel! Ok, maybe it’s a little bit sneaky, but I love how glamorous this swanky Irish hotel room is – and it couldn’t be easier to recreate the look.

1) Go for a bold bedroom wallpaper. Dark wallpaper is a surefire way to add drama, and you can always create a feature wall if you think papering all four walls will scare both your husband and yourself!

2) Grab plenty of plush cushions. Pile on the luxury with a row of cushions on a rich damask pattern.

3) Choose an oversized headboard. Make your bed the focal point with a huge headbaord that picks up one of the colours in your wallpaper.

4) Finish off the look with a stylish bed runner. A luxurious runner perks up plain white bedlinen – and it can be changed with the seasons for a speedy update.

Top tip: convince your other half you need to do ‘interior design research’ by booking into The Twelve in Galway, Ireland – it looks gorgeous … hint, hint.

Step inside Sophie Conran’s swanky home!

September 2, 2010

Do you remember Linda Barker raving about designer Sophie Conran‘s sexy pink kitchen on our The Room I Envy series? I loved it then and I love it now – especially seeing it surrounded by the other beautiful rooms in her … MANSION!

Oh the high life!

Bird wallpaper – the good, the bad and the ugly

July 29, 2010

It’s official, I’m completely torn by bird wallpapers. In some ways I find them adorable and the perfect finishing touch to a country-style scheme – especially a pretty little guest bedroom. However, in other ways I find them … well … quite frightening actually. The antique bird or retro bird ‘look’ just isn’t for me.

Here’s how far by bird wallpaper love goes…

The good – cute, country and destined for a guest bedroom, this simple bird wallpaper adds a welcoming touch.

The bad – hmmmmmm, a retro bird feature wall isn’t for me, but I’d certainly give this Seventies-inspired print marks for an eye-catching focal point.

The ugly – this is decorating hell for me. Too many birds, too many antiques, I would feel like I was on a period drama set, not my actual living room!

Vintage rose wallpaper – yay or nay?

July 27, 2010

What do you guys think about vintage rose wallpaper designs? Here was I thinking that the only debates I’d hear in the lifts were about the guy someone was dating or about what to have for lunch, but THIS?

The interior world seems divided? Old fashioned but traditional vs vintage country charm? Only for country cottages vs retro statement in a modern pad? Homely touch vs man repellent? Oh it’s all kicking off! Who says the world of cushions, soft lighting and bathroom countertops isn’t full of drama??

I think this looks really cute, a real slab of kitch country charm.

However, this frightens me … on the ceiling, too? A bit too much!

Cosy living room decorating ideas!

July 26, 2010

I know it’s “summer” and all, but that didn’t stop the “warm summer nights” turning my feet into ice blocks – it’s worse when you least expect it! Anyway, last week I was chatting to Country Homes and Interiors editor, Rhoda Parry, about creating a cosy living room and it couldn’t have come at a better time …. between my frost-bitten feet and my decision to wear a short-sleeved top to work!

Enjoy!

Feature wallpaper goes cuckoo!

July 13, 2010

Woah! Slow down feature wallpaper, I only asked what your name was!! I love a funky feature wallpaper, and I love the bird trend – especially when it’s incorporated in a summery bedroom design idea, but this is too much for me.

Maybe it’s the combination of the feature wallpaper AND the screen upholstered in exactly the same pattern? Or maybe it’s the fact that a room full of swans isn’t my idea of relaxation? (as much as I love Osborn & Little designs in general) But I just think it’s too much – what do you guys think? Am I being harsh?

June 29, 2010

I LOVE the new wallpapers from Tesco’s new range. We headed to their autumn/winter press show and were utterly WOWed by their high-impact, low-cost designs, the perfect ‘too much money spent of Pimm’s’ summer decorating remedy!

Tired (literally) of baking hot sleepness nights, I’m looking to give my bedroom a cooler, summer twist, and these wallpapers are perfect for the job … and will look just as at home when I’m shivering over winter.

Here’s a sneak peak at the new range (is it wrong that I actually like the mix of samples feature wall??)

Swanky design ideas for living rooms – modern vs classic

June 3, 2010

Ooooooh fancy! Check out these living room decorating ideas for every style. I’ve split them up between modern and classic and formal (no feet on the sofas please) and relaxed (get me my darn book, immediately!) Fine, I admit, I’d be a tad nervous about even drinking a cup of tea in one these schemes, but BOY are they easy on the eye.

Formal classic living room idea – gentle curves, eye-popping pinks and elegant florals…

The Room I envy’ by Melanie Adams

May 19, 2010
Melanie Adams

Melanie Adams

I love looking for the latest wallpaper trends and decorating tips, that’s why I asked wallpaper guru Melanie Adams founder of Wallpaperdirect, if she would kindly chat to me about the room she envies most at the moment.

“This room is fantastic – it hits all the marks for making a living room both homely, yet stylish. The designer has chosen the courageous route of papering all four walls with the fantastic Tahiti wall paper from Albany East. This design is perfect as it is both brave and bold but with a neutral background.

To accentuate the warm, deep purples on the walls, they have chosen the perfect accessories including matching cushions, curtains and floral décor. I also absolutely adore the exposed brick fireplace which is a great feature in the room bringing a bit of texture and feeling.

Using a mix of furniture styles is also very fashionable right now, and is something that many homes are incorporating, you just need to make sure that they compliment each other, which these clearly do.

All in all, this room is very much on trend, in terms of design and wallpaper, for 2010.”
