Drifting away…

June 13, 2012

Working on 25 Beautiful Homes means I’m constantly surrounded by stunning interiors, so it’s unusual for me to be stopped in my tracks by something that I just HAVE to share with you here and now. However, Pamela Makin and Reginald Byrne’s Australian house – set to appear in the August issue, out on 5th July (don’t miss it!) –  has truly taken my breath away.

It’s not just the amazing views over the ocean that made my jaw drop – this simply styled house is fabulous throughout, but you’ll have to check out the August issue if you want to see more! I love the large tree in the centre of the room, the driftwood furniture and the uninterrupted views of the Pacific. Sigh.

Drift away…

May 9, 2012

There are two things in interiors that I’ve heard a lot about the last few months. One is red, white and blue – all things British are big for 2012 as you may have already noticed. The second is coastal; think seaside, think shells, think driftwood.

So here I bring you a bedroom that I think blends these two themes perfectly. Courtesy of WorldStores, this scheme conjures images of life by the sea, with its mix of sun-bleached floorboards and frames teamed with splashes of jubilant nautical shades. Perfect – but what do you think?

Making an entrance

March 20, 2012

I’m about to redecorate my hallway and its present state leaves a lot to be desired. It’s fairly large and wide, with a staircase directly in front, but the orange wallpaper is from the 1930s, with a faded red carpet to ‘complement’ it! Ugh. I’m hoping for a fairly modern scheme, but at the moment, I can’t make up my mind whether to choose neutrals or something that makes more of a statement.

We’d love to hear how you’ve decorated your hallway, but in the meantime, here’s a few schemes that sparked my interest…

Symmetrical and eye-catching, these faux stag’s heads add interest to a white scheme (bar the brightly coloured rug).

This monochrome scheme works beautifully and the high ceilings prevent the space from appearing too dark or dingy.

A sideboard makes a handy addition for the hallway, not only providing extra storage, but also a surface on which to display lamps and decorative objects. If your hall is large enough, a chair is ideal for when you’re putting shoes on or taking them off. See more of this house by clicking here.

Très chic kitchen

July 13, 2011

Oh, I want it! So pretty, so quaint – a little slice of Paris in your own home. When I look at this room, I’m transported to a 1930s street cafe with Poirot sitting in the corner twiddling his moustache and solving mysteries (ok, maybe not…)

Normally, I find monochrome too dull, too boring, but this simple kitchen-diner proves me wrong. For me, the cute check curtains and leaded windows lift this room from ordinary to extraordinary, without being over the top. And, just in case I can’t quite shake free of my fixation with colour, a quick lick of paint on the window frames, picture rail, maybe the chairs, and some new cushions (I’m thinking a deep wine red…) and hey presto – you’ve got yourself a whole new room. Emily

A bit of all white – Grecian style living room

March 1, 2011

There’s something about all-white schemes that I tend to steer clear of – although I love it when a neutral background is used to make colour or features really pop in a room, schemes that are totally white unnerve me a little bit. I think it’s because I instinctively think about how likely it is that I would ruin the carpet or scuff the walls – it’s not something that screams ‘liveable’ to me. That’s changed slightly however after I came across this image in Livingetc of a Grecian-style minimalist living room.

All white? Yes please!

Walls, chair, clock, rug, marble accessories – all white, yet because there are a few different textures going on with the zigzag effect rug and wooden flooring, somehow it looks liveable. I can imagine lounging around in this modern minimalist chair, reading a novel and enjoying all that lovely light coming through the large windows.

What do you think – could you live with an all-white colour scheme, or would you steer clear?

Cool white

April 29, 2009

Check out this house I found on Livingetc, they’ve aptly named it ‘cool, calm and collected’.  My favourite room is the dining space, white floorboards, painted furniture and large windows give it a light bright feel – perfect for summer dining.

Hi-gloss kitchen

Gloss kitchens can look so good – especially when there is plenty of sunlight pouring into them.  This one is set below a glass extension and has a beautiful finish.

Light, bright kitchen

What a cool kitchen – and not just for the cat!  The row of pendant lights will really highlight the island unit at night. The glass shelves at the back are perfect for showing off statement glasses.

White bedroom

I love the white floorboards in this bedroom – they might be a little cold in the winter – but they look great!

Simple & stylish

September 10, 2008

I’m not sure why I like this living room. It could be the contrast of the dark wood floor against white sofa and rug, the unusual collection of hanging pendant lights or the bit of symmetry created by the two wooden cabinets – maybe it’s just all three!
